Welcome to another episode of Mighty Car Mods. This one is brought to you by
Check out this freaking mad poster that we have featuring our little red Daihatsu
This is the same little red Daihatsu
Same model of car that we started Mighty Car Mods with all those years ago in the driveway on the driveway
These will be available for a strictly limited time
Uh, and we'll autograph it to you and we'll ship it to you anywhere in the world
It directly goes to support the show it the poster looks a little bit better than the real car does right now
But we are working on that
But we have a bit of a mission ahead of us because in this episode
We are going to get this car looking mad gonna get this car driving mad
We're gonna start it here. It's turbo wooshness and just turn it into an excellent little red beast like in our poster
Welcome to another episode of Mighty Car Mods. Of course, we are back here in super garage working on the Daihatsu
So you're the best nugget that has ever been spat out of
The part of an animal that spits out a nugget which is probably its rear end nugget
Capsule extension chute at the japanese industrial complex that sort of built this thing
I mean I was referring to it more like a chicken nugget if instead of an egg came out a chicken actually
E-eggulated a nugget which is interesting because it's coming out of a car cloaca. So a carlo a car
which is where it cars eggs and
---- comes out
The um speaking of that have you ever seen anyone
You're just looking at someone and they might have just something on their nose
Might be like a little flake of skin or a little booger or something
It's just right and you can't you can't stop looking at it because it's right there
This car has that in the best possible way. Look just stick it out its nose
Oh, seriously, it's got a little little little boogering turbo right there
It's getting a little bit see it through the grill and look at that thing. It just means business
It means my nugget probably makes an extra 13.5 kilowatts over what it would have stock but I spent five grand on it
Uh today
We are going to turn the key. This car is actually going to start
Uh, we're going to try and bring back the paint as well as we can i'm going to give it the whole black black black
Fantastic. Okay. So remember how I fixed the dump on the driveway and then fixed it again last episode
Yeah, that didn't work and it still doesn't fit properly
So now i'm fixing it one last time in the hope it actually seals up properly and stops banging and rubbing on things
A small support bracket down near the gearbox should help a flex joint is a must on front-wheel drive cars as the engines can flop
Around a lot. The engine is now ready for some sweet lubricating nectar in the flavor of some castrol edge 5w40 oil
We're also going to put some castrol coolant in it and my custom repinned wiring loom can now be installed for the last time
Well done on the exhaust mutton. Well done
It now begs the question how long until we can hear this beast roaring to life so soon
I just got to go online with the ecu and tell it what engine it's trying to run
uh, we're going to make sure there's some fuel in it and
Uh, that's about it and then also the brakes which look freaking excellent
They all need to be bled
So we can then put the wheels back on so we can get it off the hoist
So lock it over here so we can work on it properly
While that is happening i'm going to be taking a deep dive back to season one of mighty car mods to our epic episode
black
That went for two minutes 46
Uh, what are we doing?
Well, i'm going to cut to an old friend of mine who's a young friend of mine and he'll tell you what's up
All we're going to do is get the things on the car that used to be black and make them blacker
What do you reckon marty?
Black, that's right. We're basically going to re-black everything. So i've just got a couple of simple things
We've got some black paint. I got some tire black. We've got some mr
Black which does rubber and then i've just got a sharpie an art line like a permanent black texter
So i'm going to go over everything I can and re-black it also
Paint up these try and make it look a little bit nicer and then martin it should be off
The hoist we can move it forward. Yeah, we've got interior stuff to do. We've got to do some steam cleaning
We've got some interior upgrades including new seats
Um, there is heaps to do
But just to clarify this episode it will be finished
driving
completed
done
100
Awesome. Let's do it. Let's get to it
It was funny looking back at some of our episodes from season one when doing this current series the black episode
It had a running time of 2 minutes and 45 seconds
And when you remove the intro and the outro the actual mods that was less than 90 seconds
So I guess what i'm saying is that alongside inventing the ipod we also invented tiktok
Back, then there was a hard limit of 10 minutes on youtube
So you had to do what you could in that time
You just made something uploaded it and hoped that someone had find it. Nobody knew what they were doing
Which is precisely why it was awesome because no one was trying to game the system like they do now
And there were no thumbnails of people doing that rectal examination face and absolutely nobody began a video by saying
Hey, it's your boy. Make sure you smash that subscribe button
We never did that and still don't we kind of figured that if someone liked the videos
They'd know what to do 20 years later youtube's now this goliath of television hollywood advertising shopping podcasts
influencers news music and social media all rolled into one and with all of the technological progress a photo of someone's face who looks
Like they're getting a colonoscopy is still going to get the most clicks in the early days
There wasn't that much to watch around cars. You had motor trend top gear mighty car mods and a few other random shows
But now there are channels for everything like if you're into salves dentistry and chihuahuas
There's a channel out there for you somewhere
Meanwhile our cars well, honestly, they still suck because they always did but that's why we love them
So to make this thing start we got to do a little bit of setup now
I've plugged all the wires in and I know where they all go
I've mapped that out in the software so I can tell it where its oil pressure sensor is
Where its air temp sensor is where its coils are where its injectors are and importantly where the trigger is
That's the stuff you kind of need at a very basic level to make this thing start and idle
Including the idle control circuit, of course, so it actually does idle throttle things like that as well
we're going to map out but
um
There's also a lot of setup you can do and that's where it starts to get tricky
But the cool thing is i'm actually going to be able to upload the map that was in our rusty race car
Directly into this ecu now
It's not exactly the same the wiring locations are different
But the fuel map and the injectors and a bunch of other things like that are the same
So i'm going to go through load that in and that should make this thing start right up
So now the cool thing is with our engine configuration
It's all in here and should be correct moment of truth. Uh, it's time to crank this thing now
I wired this entirely myself. So if the smoke comes out or the rods come out, it's entirely my fault
But i've turned the injectors off good job. Thanks, man. I'm stoked with it
This is a good one to start on if you want to wire a car from scratch
This is an excellent one to start on very simple
I mean you are saying that before we've tried starting it. We haven't even we have not seen any of these cranks at all
So we're gonna crank it and see if we get anything up on the screen. We want to see some rpm
Hopefully some oil pressure and nothing blows up. So let's go ready. Yep. Here we go. Three two one
It sounds healthy not working. No, it's good. It's cranking fine, but we're not seeing rpm
So that means the configuration is not correct
But that's fine. That's what we're here for and that's my kind of nightmare material
When you're certain that every wire is in the right spot you checked and triple checked and it won't work at all
The good news is we are getting rpm, which is excellent
So the trigger system is actually seeing the engine turn around which means like the haltech cannot work without it
Well, no ecu can really the thing we're not seeing is oil pressure now
Some people just risk it and go it doesn't matter start it
Anyway, it's probably working but I think Martin
Let's just start it. Anyway, it's probably working
I don't think it will but let's do you want to give it a crack?
Everyone's gonna be screaming when you said some people would they all scream going you can't do that
You're talking to me. You can't do that. We're doing it
Just turn everything on and let me turn the key Martin. You can try
I don't I don't know if it'll run but you can give it you can give it a hit and see what it does
Okay, are you ready?
We got to we got too many flashing red lights telling us i've done it wrong
One more time
Cool. Thanks for watching
Uh martin
I'm gonna roll the guards. Yeah, cool, and i'm gonna piss on the headlights and rub some avocado all over it
Well, i'm gonna fix the
Problem, whatever it is. I guess i'll work it out
In the early days of mcm we'd roll the guards by heating up the paint and then smash them with a hammer
With lowered cars this stops the guards cutting into the tires these days
We've got a professional guard roller, but there's only one problem the car is too small
So at its lowest setting the rolling component up here is above the lip so
That there's not going to work, which means i'm going proper old school
with
a heat gun and a hammer
It's time to get these mad looking brake calipers working properly
So i'm going to suck out any of the old fluid with this sucker thing and then fill the whole system up with some castrol
react dot 4 fluid
Brake fluid often gets overlooked because it looks fine. But over time it does absorb water and does degrade
With some fresh fluid and a working brake system. It's finally time to fit up our mad wheels martin
The wheels look incredible. They look superb. It's pretty aggressive. They only just make it on there
But that is an excellent size for this little car and martin that wheel is an interesting combination
Of the things that you and I like in one because you and I we agree on a lot of things
Yeah, we don't agree on wheel choice. No, but this one here
We fully agree on we fully agree on spoky enough for you and dishy enough for me
Which is great because this is very much a team effort car
So I got a few more gremlins to chase on this to make it work
I've got an issue where my it's not showing oil pressure properly
And I really want to be able to see that before we get it running
So i'm going to work on that for a little while and then we're going to get this thing off the hoist
And start making it look good. Thanks to the very clever people at haltech tech support
It turns out i've got two issues the oil pressure sensor wiring was backwards and even more embarrassingly
I put one of the trigger wires into the wrong pin
It was a single wrong pin that brought the entire thing to a standstill
And it took some clever sleuthing to figure out why we were getting a trigger signal
But it looked nothing like what a Daihatsu trigger signal should here we go. Do the honors mate
um
Martin, I think you should do it. No, I think you should you're right there
I want you now go go because I know I stopped I got one pin wrong on the wiring
And I should I should martin you do it. All right. I don't really feel like arguing about it anymore
Here we go. All right, you got it. Martin. Let's go. Let's go
Good job, man. Awesome. Thank you. Scotty get on your scotty world's biggest exhaust leak somewhere there
Mad wow excellent
So good
It's alive. Yes, it's all done turbos on there. Whatever. I just need to put bigger injectors
Where would we be without scotty people? What a freaking legend
What are you scotty legend?
What are you scotty you sound like an f1 driver where they just go thanks guys after you won that, you know won the first place
Confident
He's a confident caravaner
With a conniving desire to be a carnivore. Well, the car is running now, which is absolutely incredible
Even making a few little mini turbo noises story. Uh, next job is to fix up the interior and martin
You've got something special to go inside it and there's something special is not martin
It's actually an upgrade and a replacement to these seats. Where is the driver's seat by the way? I don't know
I actually don't know care of the blue turd
Not really, but the same seats are in the blue turd. These are siri on gtbi seats. Why are they good?
They bolt straight in they've got good bolstering and as a bonus the steering wheel also fits
So this is a mad upgrade over the little sort of stock gray one. It looks cool
Fully compatible everything just works. This will all bolt in needs a bit of a tidy up
That's going to make the car way more comfy and epic to drive. What's that?
I think that's on most cars. That's where people sort of wipe their burger grease hands
What they really need is one of our seat covers
I don't I don't think i'm not going to sit on too hard because I don't want to damage it martin, but right there
it's
Like why is it so disgusting there?
And the next time that you get you go to put a set of new seats in and you wonder why they don't fit
It's because someone one of your mates in your shed sat on the seat on concrete floor. It always bends these things
Um what we could do potentially martin. These are the mighty car mod seat covers. We'll give it a proper clean anyway
But that looks pretty cool
If you were rolling one of them in your car that would stop you having that epicenter of human slime in the middle of your seat
Yeah, but as per season one of mighty car mods, we got to clean it
Where we were doing the cleaning
Yep
Do you remember how much came out of that thing?
Like look at how much slop came out of the seats. This was from a gtir and a micro
That is a lot of slop. So, uh, anyway today i'm going to clean that up properly great martin
Everything in the interior needs to just come out. Yep
Come out i'll tidy up all the black wiring and all the like stuff that's just floating around in there
Put it all up under the dash
So it's out of the way and looks stock and then uh, yeah, give it a bit of a clean and then we've got to try
Get into this we'll talk more about that later. All right, let's get into it
One of the best ways of upgrading your car's interior on the cheap is swapping in parts from a higher spec model
And that's exactly what we're doing here with parts from the sirion, but this stuff needs a serious clean
So i'm using the ryobi spot cleaner to suck out 25 years of slime
There are potentially billions of bacteria living inside a used car and studies have shown that the worst spots are the steering wheel
Door handles gear shifter and worst of all the driver's seat
So if you're buying a used car at a minimum give these areas a proper clean
Next up the filthy old floor mats are going in the bin
Then the interior is also getting a proper vacuum and then we'll also use the wet dry vac on the carpet
All of this stuff is really simple and easy to do yourself
And even if you're not into modifying your car, it can be super satisfying and rewarding to keep it as clean as possible
Plus you get a deeper connection with your car and if you care for it
It'll care for you or something like that
Anyway, while we're on the subject of deep philosophical questions about the meaning of life
I'd really like to know the meaning of engine knock air fuel ratios and boost pressure
Which is why i'm installing this haltech can gauge up on the a pillar
It's a multi-function gauge that we can configure via wi-fi to show us what's going on in our engine
The gauge is in so it's time to throw one of our new seat covers at marty's face
There's a link for these down below our seat cover fits perfectly and next i'm going to swap over the steering wheel
Our car and the siri on this came out of are very closely related
So there's a huge crossover in parts seats engines steering wheels wiring looms all sorts of things making this a quick and easy upgrade
Now you can buy specialized steering wheel pullers
But i've found the best way is to loosen off the nut that holds the steering wheel on
Give it a good bash all around the steering wheel to break the seal and then undo it
Take it off and replace it with your new one
Also, make sure you don't unwind the clock spring too far because that will wreck it
The great outdoors has not been kind to this red paint that was sprayed on a quarter of a century ago in japan
So next we're going to try and bring it back to its former glory
It is time to turn some of our attention to the outside of this nugget now needless to say
It is in pretty rough condition. It is this panel here. Particularly. It's rough. There's dense
There's rust on there the paint is completely thrashed, but you know what I like it
This is the whole wabi-sabi japanese thing like this car has lived now, of course, you could repaint the whole thing
We've done it
We turned one of these cars into an actual show car custom body kit and everything and an endurance car
And a race car an endurance car twice
Yeah, it's also worth mentioning that this particular one has lived a lot longer than our old one
It's actually a bit of an achievement for a car this small and nuggety and cheap
Let's be real to survive this long because people go. Oh the servicing costs a bit. I've got a reg old again
It's worth more than the actual car totally and we think this one here
Has spent a lot of time in the country and evidence as such is the bumper here looks like it has had a light bar
Fitted to it. So you've got all of these holes. So there's obviously one aspect of me
That's like leave it exactly as it is as it has been weathered, but there's another part of me
That's like it's not meant to have ten holes in it
So that there I am going to attempt to fix up. So basically i'm going to cut up a little bit of this gauze
I'm going to melt some plastic over here and then just do some basic bog on the front
The real problem is how do you match the paint?
What i'm going to attempt to do is get some color match paint from super cheap
Spray it on once it's been repaired then try and buff it up and age it a little bit
Now you might just be thinking just paint it properly
But then this won't look like the rest of the car and we also don't want to paint the whole car
So I honestly don't know how it's going to turn out
But i'm pretty sure it's going to look better than that
And
It was another epic session working on the Daihatsu
I gotta say the exterior came up way better than I thought it would the front bumper is looking excellent
We're going to show you the final thing all revealed next episode the interior man with the Daihatsu
Chef's kiss bolt-in siri on stuff and well done getting all the wiring done except for putting one wire in the wrong spot
Which meant that the triggering didn't work which meant it didn't start but thank you to haltech tech support and particularly scotty
It's now running perfectly. Thank you very much scotty next episode is the finale of this build
Uh, we will be pissing on the headlights. I know you're waiting for it like that's actually happening
We're getting the avocados out. We're getting some of the old school mods. We're doing a bunch of stuff from season one
Uh, you're doing injectors. Yeah, we're doing some ecu stuff. Then we're going to be taking the car for a drive
There's some very very special things happening next episode. So stay tuned for that martin
This is almost the end of the poster
If you don't have one now, which means when the build's done the post has done people you should get one
Like now is the time we also released at the same time as this a heritage mighty car mods pack
which we've seen lots of you post about because
We've been uh
We've been including a few freebies and a few bonuses with a lot of those orders and we see that you've been receiving them on
The mighty mods group. So thank you very much
If you do want to grab these we'll autograph it. We'll send it to you anywhere in the world
It directly supports the show. Uh, and this is almost your last chance to get one next episode. You'll see the final car
We'll take it for a drive. Uh, it's going to be absolutely excellent. Thank you very much for watching and see you next see you then
