Gonna be a lot of travel for this holiday weekend. I'm sure a live look
tonight as we continue to monitor potential severe weather overnight.
Look at Frederick, where we've been seeing that lightning pop off Mike
thomas, what you've been seeing here in the past few minutes. We've seen more
warnings go up across the D. C. Area. In fact, new one up from Montgomery
County and parts of Fairfax County is severe. Weather continues to grow.
Even though we're approaching the midnight hour here, we warned you all
day that conditions tonight would just be pretty favorable for some of these
storms to hold on to their intensity as they came out of Pennsylvania.
Severe thunderstorm watch that's in yellow and that remains up until two
o'clock in the morning for most of the region, including both D. C. And
Baltimore. Let's get in on some of these storms and we'll go first right
into northern Virginia mentioned that this was the strongest storm we have
here on radar and they did a little bit of updating for me. There we go. Got my
data back and you can see heavy, heavy. I mean we're up to 300 known 27
lightning strikes and that's a 15 minute counter for you. If you've ever
wondered there. So within the last 15 minutes, 300 and now 28 strikes
reported most of that coming out of Loudoun County and that's the warning
that got extended to include extreme northwestern portions of Fairfax County
and most of central western portions of Montgomery County, including Rockville
up towards Gaithersburg. You guys are under this severe thunderstorm warning
until midnight. And this storm has certainly had some intensity to it as
it's pushed itself eastward down to the south of there around Gainesville.
City of Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax and Prince William County
sliver of each of those counties there are under a severe thunderstorm
warning that will go into 11 45. That one's just a little bit more
disorganized. It's this one to the north, though, that certainly has shown
at times some pretty strong wind output. That's what I'm showing you here.
These colors show me what the winds are doing within the storm. And right
where you see that bright green right through Leesburg probably was pretty
gusty. Not all that long ago. If it's not still at the moment, radar
estimated winds approaching 50 MPH out of this storm. I wouldn't say it's
extreme, but certainly a little intense for a storm that's coming by close to
the midnight hour. Now storms have been popping up more and more. Most of
Fairfax County, probably here in some thunder. There's some rain across
central and eastern portions of the county. Now that goes down through
eastern Prince William County along I 95 Stafford County. They don't kind of
getting out of you and over the Potomac and heading into Charles County,
Southern Prince George's and extreme northern Charles dealing with one cell
that's about the heads right into northern Calvert County. So Sunderland
heads up. This will be heading your direction shortly, though that one
probably going to remain below severe intensity. This one down to the south
blew up a bit as it crossed the Potomac, not seeing quite as much
lightning output out of it as it gets in the northern and central portions of
ST Mary's County, Chesapeake Ranch Estates down towards Leonard Town. Some
lightning, some thunder, some heavy rain. Hopefully that one and latest
trends are probably gonna keep that one below severe level criteria to the
north. We had that severe storm up near Baltimore. That one's starting to
weaken, thankfully, as it crosses the city of Baltimore. And then this line
out to the west is dealing with or is weakening a bit as it comes across, but
is still producing some heavy rain. New severe thunderstorm warning, by the way,
just went up. Why? We're talking about it for central portions of Fairfax
County, and this does include D. C. As well. So while I'm tracking all these
warnings, new one just put up for Alexandria City of Fairfax Falls Church
and most of central portions of Fairfax only goes right up to the D. C.
Line that will go until 11 45 this evening. So again, a lot of heavy rain,
a lot of lightning. And yeah, it's not often this is one of the first times in
the few years that I've done evening news here at Fox five that we've been
tracking severe weather this late into the evening. But some of these
warnings could continue. That's the strongest cluster for sure, approaching
western portions of the Beltway very shortly. It is still very warm
temperatures in the eighties out there. Dew points in the upper seventies in
some spots near 80 degrees. In fact, in Leonardtown, 80 degree dew point for
you right now. So that is the fuel that these storms are tapping into, and
that's why they're so intense, and that's why the rain with them is
particularly heavy. Now, by tomorrow morning should be out of here. Great
for the zip trip. Fortunately, by tomorrow afternoon, we're still hot.
We're still humid and we're unstable, and we could do another round of some
strong to severe thunderstorms here in the D. C. Region for your Friday. We are
outlook for the threat for severe thunderstorms tomorrow as well. So we'll
keep you ahead of all of these storms as they continue the fire. Little note
for the weekend. We did have to extend that some storms could linger into
Saturday. This is particularly true if you live across Virginia, kind of
northern and central Virginia will have the best shot at a few storms hanging
around on Saturday, but the rest of the weekend still looks great. Labor Day
Monday still looking like the best day of the three day weekend. Kenneth. All
right.
