Lindsay Clancy trial: Tensions flare as defense blames 1 juror for deadlock
#lindsayclancytrial #news #fyp
A tense moment in court, Lindsay Clancy's defense attorney saying there is one juror who is refusing
to adhere to the judge's instruction. If we come back here in a half an hour with a mistrial because
of a because of a juror that has just spurned the instructions of this court, it's a shame.
The defense asking for that juror to be removed. The judge declining,
sending the jury home for the day. I don't feel that it is proper for me to side with one
side or the other. This afternoon the judge calling each juror into the courtroom one by
one, bringing them into a sidebar conversation with the attorneys from both sides and Clancy
herself. The judge then reiterating his instructions on reasonable doubt to the whole
jury. I want to remind you that you are required to follow my instructions on the law as I gave
them to you. The jury deliberating now for six days. Twice they've said they are deadlocked,
but the judge pushing them yesterday to keep going. Those nine women and three men trying
to decide if Clancy should be held criminally responsible for killing her three young children.
Clancy's defense doesn't deny she did it, but says she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
But the prosecution says she planned those killings methodically, urging the jury to
find her guilty of first degree murder. The jury also weighing four other possible verdicts,
second degree murder, manslaughter, not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.
And if the jury doesn't reach a verdict soon, the judge could declare a mistrial and then the
district attorney would have to decide if they're going to retry the case.
