Now to a new honor to a life stolen.
It was a year ago this month our region
was transfixed by the search for Kata Scott.
October 4th, 2025, Scott disappeared after leaving work,
giving way to a frantic citywide effort to find her.
Two weeks later, investigators did,
discovering her body in a shallow grave in Germantown.
Today, as her parents work to keep Kata Scott's spirit alive,
lawmakers in Harrisburg are honoring her memory.
Action News reporter Taronda Thomas has the story.
It's been tough. It feels like it happened yesterday.
Kevin Scott has missed his daughter,
Kata, every day since she passed away.
But one day is more difficult than the rest.
I think about it every day, but yeah,
her birthday, it's going to be difficult.
November 18th is Kata's birthday.
And now, in the state of Pennsylvania,
November 18th is also Kata Scott Day.
The chair thanks the maker of the resolution.
The Pennsylvania legislature made that declaration
this morning in a near-unanimous vote.
Democratic State Representative Andre Carroll had the idea
and introduced the resolution.
Kata's story reminds us that behind every headline is a human being,
behind every name is a family,
and behind every tragedy is a community forever changed.
Speaking to his fellow lawmakers about Kata as her family watched on.
I was taken aback a little bit because of the surprise.
I didn't think anything like that was possible.
Kata Scott went missing in October of last year.
After a two-week search,
investigators found her body at a vacant school.
As the suspect awaits trial,
Kata's family is pursuing their mission to honor her memory.
The Kata Scott Foundation providing scholarships, grants, and mentors
for girls who are positive and ambitious, just like Kata was.
The foundation was founded on her 24th birthday,
and now on what would have been her 25th birthday,
Kata Scott is honored with her own day.
We're going to do our part to make sure, you know, Kata's name lives
on positively and hopefully impacts some women in Philadelphia.
In addition to introducing the resolution marking November 18,
2026 as Kata Scott Day,
Representative Carroll
also talked about something called the Ebony Alert System.
It's a proposed law that would dedicate more resources to finding black
and brown women and children.
Advocates say those cases often get less attention.
