The Sharks have some INTERESTING choices to make...
Sep 3, 2026
One of the things that make the San Jose Sharks so compelling is the abundance of young talent and one of them who's been in
The system for a while is seemingly ready to make the jump to the NHL
I again wanted to continue on my theme of rising stars. It's finally September
Yay, but we still actually have a good amount of time until you even play a preseason game
So let's let's just continue on this little theme. Let's continue with the Swedes. Let's talk about Philip Bystedt today
Our 22 year old left-handed and like a lot of our young forwards he can play a couple of positions
He can play both center and left wing. He's six two and a hundred and eighty seven pounds and
before this year's draft, I was saying let's package him and Eklund and
Trade them for defenseman and draft Ivar Stenberg second overall and yeah, you guys know
I'm so happy we drafted Ivar second overall and we did trade Eklund
Kind of indirectly for a defenseman
We traded him in a package and got the ninth overall pick for that and we use that ninth overall on
defenseman Keaton Verhoff, but we held on to Philip Bystedt and
I know I say this about all of them, but he's an interesting player
I said it a minute ago
What makes this team so compelling is the abundance of?
Interesting young players and he's certainly part of that and he has got an interesting element to him
But before I unpack it all I just want to remind you guys that we're still on Twitter and our handle is still at
Sharks Digest you could probably repeat this back to me cuz I've said it a million times
But we're there to give you the latest news trades reports and rumors about the San Jose Sharks
We can't always hop on a video but we can always send out a tweet and it's another way to talk to you guys
So give us a follow and a shout at Sharks Digest on Twitter. Let's back up to the 2020 2021 season
I know shocking the past few videos. I've repeatedly backed up to the 2022 2023 season, but nope this time
Let's go 2020 2021 when Philip Bystedt was 16 turning 17 years old because his birthday's in February
When he was playing for the Ling Sherping Hockey Club
I can only find pictures of him in the SHL, but he was on the j20 national team and in 15 games
He had 12 points 5 goals 7 assists. He was also a plus 8
I want to back up to the season because firstly he did play in Holinka after this in
2020 summer 2021 and I'll get to that in a second
But he did actually make his first ever SHL appearance this season
He did play a game in the SHL and that's pretty impressive for someone that age
But let's talk about him donning the Swedish jersey like a lot of our young Swedish players
They love wearing this jersey and they go crazy when they wear it
But he played in the Holinka Gretzky Cup that summer what that tournament is is basically a
Preseason showcase for players that are entering the season that they're gonna play in before their draft. It's an international tournament
so he's playing for Sweden and he won bronze and
Went off wearing the Trey Kroener in five games played. He had seven points three goals four assists
So he was really really great in that tournament again. These guys love playing for Sweden
They just go crazy when they do but so set him up for success going into the season that he played in ahead of
His draft year the 21 22 season. He returned to Ling Sherping. He did actually play two games in the j18
Region he had three points a goal and two assists. So clearly needed that higher level of competition
So he joined the j20 national team and in 40 games played he had 49 points
16 goals 33 assists. He's even a plus 23 and
I've I mentioned it in my last video about something villainous, but the Swedish hockey leagues are a little bit weird
They love to just split their seasons and they do this thing called
J20 top which is basically what it sounds like. It's a
subdivision of the most elite in the league and he was part of it and he was actually
The leader of assists in the j20 top division get 18 in that subdivision, but overall he had 33 assists again
49 points in 40 games played 16 goals 33 assists
And he was a really really big part of the playoff run that year for Ling Sherping in eight games played
He had ten points a goal and nine assists. They won the SM gold medal, which is basically the championship
They won playoffs
He was really spectacular and again a goal and nine assists. So for Philip by set
It's not always about scoring a goal
But something that he's so good at is moving the puck and part of that is because he's so good from going from zero to
20
Immediately. He has those really fantastic bursts that are hard to do and are incredibly valuable
And of course I say about a lot of our really talented forwards
His hands can keep up with his feet. That is a major issue
If you're moving really really fast, you need your hands to keep up and he also has an equally fast shot
So all of these things combined make a really great player out of Philip by set
He is so confident when it comes to driving to the net and he's really good at doing it like Luca Cagnone
actually, it's not always gonna result in the goal, but it'll always result in a play and
He's so quick with it that he can make a play off of anything. So
He was really really great and
In the playoffs his nine assists were actually the most out of anyone
So really great season for him. And of course that summer in
2022 he was drafted
27th overall by the San Jose Sharks
Love it. Love it
Great. Love it in Montreal. Here. He is getting drafted
But so he was confident going into his next season with Ling Sherping and
This time he spent the majority of the season in the SHL
He had 45 games and 20 points 7 goals 13 assists. He was outstanding
So unsurprisingly, he was named the SHL's rookie of the year. He was great. He did actually also play
One regular season game for the j-20 national team
It seems like it was just so they could have him for playoffs and he was great
He had six points in four games in playoffs two goals four assists again
Not always about scoring a goal just making that play and getting the puck to the net
That is what Philip by set does really really well
And of course like a lot of our international guys, they represent their nations many many many times
So he represented Sweden again in the middle of that season this time in world juniors u-20 and he had
Ten points in seven games four goals six assists and a plus eight. So really great performance
unsurprising that he was named a top three player on his team and he also played in the
International junior games. I've mentioned this it's different from world juniors
But it's still an international tournament seems a little bit more lax because they seem to just go off in this tournament
but in the u-20
international junior games
He had 23 points in 13 games 8 goals and 15 assists. So he was really really good
Unsurprisingly, he signed a contract with the Sharks
But the Sharks loaned him again to Ling Sherping in the SHL and in 47 games
He had 17 points 8 goals 9 assists. He was pretty good in playoffs or goals 2 points a goal in assists. So
Sharks saw that they said, all right, we like that. Let's let's bring him over
To the AHL so he can play for the Barracuda
He played eight games for the CUDA and he had seven points four goals and three assists
So he was really great. And then again in the middle of that season played for Sweden once again in
The world juniors u-20 again, and this time he won silver
He had four points in seven games three goals and assists
he also again played in the international junior games and he had 14 points in 15 games in the u-20 international during the
games
nine goals and five assists and
So the next season 24 25 season the Sharks said, all right, let's let's keep him around
Let's not loan him to the SHL. Let's let's have him play for the CUDA this season and in 50 games
He had 31 points 12 goals 19 assists. He was good in playoffs as well three three goals in six games
But you know, that's that's a good season, but it's not an outstanding
Season, but last year in the 25 26 season
He took it to another level which that is his interesting element
He really really really increased his trade stock
which is why I was saying for a long time trade him and Eklund for defense because we probably could have gotten someone pretty good
For him because in this past season in 65 games played he had 60 points
22 goals 38 assists
He was the point and assist leader on the Barracuda and he was in second for goals behind only
Wallstrom who had 24 but he had 22 goals in the season and
we had a really short playoff run only two games, but he did have an assist and
Those 60 game points in 65 games played not surprising that he was named to the HL
Pacific All-Star
roster, so
really really great
past season by Philip by set he really took it to another level and
Again what's interesting about him is the fact that he just turned it on
clearly is ready to take it to the next step a lot of scouts have been saying him and musty are ready to make it
to the
Sharks, but we have a lot of forwards
we have a lot of forwards on the Sharks, so I don't really know where he's gonna go, but
It would be interesting to see him
I think he definitely deserves a shot of being seen more in
the San Jose Sharks sweater instead of the San Jose Barracuda sweater and
Especially because I can't not talk about him
we have Ivar Stenberg coming in and honestly, it might be kind of fun to have a little Swedish collection line of
Stenberg by set and perhaps centered by Alex Weinberg, you know, there's some options here
but again, like I said, we have a lot of forwards and
There aren't enough spots on the roster. So
Maybe we'll be seeing more by set. I don't really know who will put in his place
I'd love to know what you guys think like whose place is he gonna take on this roster because
Again, he deserves a chance
Absolutely this past season shows that he's ready to make that jump. He's adjusted
He's ready to show us show everyone what he's got. But where's he gonna go? That is a very very big question
There's no chance. We're not playing Stenberg. He's gonna be so fun to watch but where does by stick go?
Where does musty go which I'll do a video on him, but where do these guys go?
there's a lot of question marks on this team and
but
One thing about Philip by set is his trade stock is through the roof right now
So let's say he doesn't work out
We can probably get someone pretty good for him or at least in a package with him. So
We'll see right?
There's a lot of things that we're not entirely sure about going into the season and we're not gonna know until another few weeks
But we can just speculate that's a whole lot of fun
Drop a comment below so we can continue doing so can't wait for this season go Sharks
