A Tiny A-Frame Cabin Built for Adventure

Set between a woodland and a stream in the United Kingdom, the Climbers Cabin by AR Design Studio is a compact, 25 square meter retreat designed as guest accommodation and an independent space for the family's children. The brief called for an off-grid, self-built cabin, so the design had to be simple enough for the client and friends to construct, using sustainable and locally sourced materials. The cabin starts with a simple 6x4 meter box, carefully adapted to accommodate four people. A pitched roof creates enough height for a mezzanine bedroom, while a side extension provides storage without sacrificing floor space. At the front, the main truss is angled towards the northwest, forming a sheltered terrace while capturing the late evening sun. Inside, the layout centers on a flexible living space, facing a large picture window that frames the surrounding woodland. Children's bunks sit beneath the mezzanine bed. With smaller windows, creating more intimate views of the trees. The bunks also connect directly to the terrace, while a larger side terrace extends the living area outdoors. Structurally, the cabin uses four pre-fabricated A-frame trusses, supported on simple pad foundations and brick piers. Upcycled scaffold boards finish the interior, while locally sourced cedar shingles protect the exterior. Thick insulation between these layers helps maintain warmth year-round, allowing this small cabin to rely on thoughtful proportions, natural materials, and its connection to the landscape, rather than sheer size.
