Welcome to Makin' Meals with Mika. I have a special guest here, my daughter Mariah.
We have Makin' Meals with Mika and Mariah and my son Marvin. He's behind the
camera. Today we are preparing one of my kids favorite meals or we're
going to have this for lunch. This is a great way to get your kids in the
kitchen cooking with you. I don't know if you guys know, you probably don't, but my
son Marvin he was actually featured on Chopped Junior. I will put a link to his
episode in the comments. So we're going to make ramen. Now if you go to a store
ramen is about what? A dollar? No, like in a restaurant it's about $16, $17 in a
restaurant. This pack of ramen is 24 cents. Some people want to act all brand
new saying, I don't eat ramen, I don't eat ramen. I want to show you, well we're going to
show you how to take this 24 pack of ramen and make it into a gourmet bowl
that you can buy for $16, $17 in the store. So these are all the ingredients.
I'm going to go through them real quick. They will be listed up in the comments section. So we
have beef ramen. I have some really nice sirloin steak that I've already sliced
really, really thin. We have a whole onion, a couple of cloves of garlic
chopped, three, I like cage-free brown eggs. These are just my preference. And
then I have about a half a cup of scallions or green onions. And then I
love to use kale. You like kale, right Raya? Now you can technically use whatever
green vegetable you have. So whether it's kale, whether it's spinach, I love bok choy.
We have kale on hand. We're using kale. And these are the seasons that I put in
the ramen. Do not feel overwhelmed. I know it looks like a lot, but I love all
these flavors. So I have soy sauce. We have rice wine vinegar. This is my
favorite. Chili garlic sauce. Me and my kids, we love our food spicy. This is
when I add the spice. We have fish sauce and then we have sesame oil. Alright, now
like I said, I'm going to try to approximate the ingredients, but I just
put a couple of sprinkles and I'm tasting along the way. So let's
just get started. First we're just going to boil the noodles. Now I'm going to
give you the recipe to make one bowl of noodles. It's three of us, so we're just
going to do three. So first we just boil the noodles as directed in the package. Now we are going to cook the
noodles as directed on the package. The package says cook for three minutes. I am
cooking three packages right now. We're going to cook these for three minutes
and then I'm going to save the water. Do not toss your water that you cook your
noodles in. So the eggs are going to be soft-boiled eggs. We are going to boil
these for 10 minutes and then remove them from the heat. While the noodles and
the eggs are cooking, I'm putting just about a teaspoon of sesame oil in an
already hot wok. Sesame oil is really, really pungent. You only need a little
bit. I'm going to add the steak to this wok. Saute it until it's nice and done. I will say about two to three minutes.
It looks like our noodles are done. What I do is I touch them. If they're nice and
soft, you see you can break that, that means that they're done. We're going to
take these out and just scoop them in your bowl. Now that the meat is all
brown, we're going to add our onions and saute. Onions with the garlic. With the
garlic and we're going to add our kale. We're also going to add one, two, three,
four, about five shakes of the rice wine vinegar and a little soy sauce. We're
Continue to stir. This is where the goodness happens. This is your broth. We're going to
add our flavor packets. Good job Mariah. She's stirring it all in there. We're also
going to add about two tablespoons. Now this is, mind you, this is for three
people. My kids and I, we like our spicy. So we're going to add about two to three
tablespoons. Look at that chili garlic paste. Look at all that goodness. So we're
going to add three because we like our spicy. I'm going to add a little bit of soy sauce. Now be
careful with the soy sauce because your seasoning packets, it has salt in it.
But we're going to add a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce and about six
or seven drops of fish sauce. And we're just going to let this marinate and work
and get delicious. Now our broth has been cooking for a while. Now this is the
moment of truth. You just taste a little bit to see if it's to your liking.
It's spicy. It is spicy. I think it's quite delicious. Is it too spicy? No, I need more spice.
See, she wants more spice. I'm going to let her put her own spice. So I would say we've been
cooking this for about maybe 10 minutes. Now it's time to put it over our ramen.
After your broth is done, you take the filling and you scoop it over your bowls.
Try to divide it evenly if you're making this for more than one person. I'm going
to go through, divide this evenly. Then we get down to the to the juice. You just
pour it. I like to do mine in a wok because you can do large quantities in
the wok. That looks about even. We're going to take our egg. We're going to top the ramen off with your
with your egg, some green onions. Take your egg, green onions. Marvin doesn't want
egg on his. Green onions. I like green onions.
All right, now everything is done. So here comes the final test. If your
teenagers like it, they're delicious. Let's go.
It's good. Is that good? What do you think, Brian? It's good. Taste the broth. Let's get some of that broth.
They love ramen. What's the broth taste like? Spicy. I like it spicy. That's good. What do you think, Brian? I like it spicy. Let's taste that egg.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's good. So, ladies and gentlemen, my 24 pack of ramen turned into this
deliciousness. I would say with all the ingredients, these are about maybe $4 a
bowl. You don't have to use the sirloin. If you want to use shrimp, I know people
love shrimp. If you want to use chicken, you can use chicken, leftover chicken or
chicken breast. You can put mushrooms in here, whatever you want. You can throw
whatever vegetables you want to make a really hearty meal for your family.
All right, so thank you for making meals with Mika, with Marvin, and Mariah. We'll
see you next time.
