People are obsessed with dog that looks like mythological creature
Sep 1, 2026
What is that?
It is like some little creature
that crawled out from some magical bridge somewhere.
If a gargoyle turned into a little velvety,
lush, stuffed animal, that's Grits.
He has no idea the magnetic pull he has.
People crouch down, they want to touch him,
they want to hug him, they want to kiss him.
But Grits seems so delightfully unaware of himself.
I'm Emma, and this is Grits' story for GeoBeats.
I often describe him to other people
like having a little human boy child.
I feel like he's just not been tainted by the world at all.
Grits came to us by the way
of the Animal Care Centers of NYC.
He was the first boy dog we had ever fostered or adopted.
And so I just remember feeling like this felt different
because I felt like I didn't know him
the same way as I know female dogs.
And we foster failed him
about probably a month after we got him.
We just giggle all of the time
because he just will be sitting in the corner of the room
and you look over at him and you're like,
I don't know what's in my house.
It is not a dog.
He relaxes on a level I didn't know was possible.
Sometimes I wonder if he has bones in his body
because he is just like a limp little rag doll.
And he is a dog that is so deeply at ease
and comfortable with himself.
He's so strange looking.
There's just something very intriguing about him.
When I met him, I feel like we had been reunited.
And I think everyone kind of feels that way about him
is that you feel like he's always been your friend.
He was very sick the first few days.
I remember giving him so many steam showers, baths.
We took him to the vet within the first 18 hours
that we had him
because he really needed to get on antibiotics.
But he was in great spirits.
He acts the same even when he's not feeling well.
He's our easy breezy boy.
He is unbothered by anything present day now.
His main enemy in life are pigeons.
But that's about it.
