Well, the NFL teams had to get down to the 53 man rosters with
the deadline at six o'clock on Sunday. And the Lions they had
some big decisions to make. And some big moves. They did make
huge implications for the Lions as they go into their season
opener against the Saints coming up in a couple of weeks. We're
going to dive in some of those big moves some of those
surprises on the offensive side of the ball on this edition of
Lions Digest. Hey, everybody, Captain Lou here want to take a

most passionate fan bases, the Detroit Lion fan base. All
right. The trade or the roster deadline, the 53 man rosters.
Sunday at six o'clock, the Lions had some huge moves to make. And
they did. Let's start by looking at one of the bigger ones for
the Lions. As Kevin Hills reported that Jacob Saylors has
been informed that he made the 53 man roster for the Lions and
he indeed did. One of the four running backs for the Lions to
make the roster. Travion Williams was waived today.
Saylors, he made the biggest impression for the Lions in
training camp, hands down. 100 yards yesterday and 16 carries
against Indianapolis 190 plus yards in the preseason leading
the way for the Lions. He was on the bubble, maybe going into
the game yesterday. And he really made a strong case for
with that game. And you still maybe had a little bit of
question mark. But not only did he make the roster, but boy oh
boy, he could really make an instant impact for the Lions.
Now we all know what the injury situation is. For Isaiah
Pacheco, the Lions signed him in the offseason to be the new
Knuckles for Jameer Gibbs. Well, at the beginning of
training camp, the MCL sprain for Pacheco and then head coach
Dan Campbell revealing just earlier in the week, he's got a
back problem, some type of back injury. It's touch and go. Now,
Campbell claims that he will more than likely be ready. But
when you hear the words touch and go and you hear back injury,
that puts a shade of doubt. The seeds are planted. And so when
asked about Jacob Saylors, head coach Dan Campbell didn't
hesitate by saying he wasn't afraid to use him as the primary
backup. Dan Campbell was quoted as saying, hey, he knows
everything about our system. He loves guys like that. And I just
love the thought of having a guy in our system that knows our
terminology, knows the protections, knows our guys
familiar with the quarterbacks. I love a guy that knows it all.
That's what he thinks of Jacob Saylors. So that's huge for the
Lions. I don't know if it's really a surprising move. But
hearing this makes one think that he might even have jumped
over Shion Bakke as number three. And if Pacheco is
injured, then that could potentially put him as the new
Knuckles behind Sonic Jameer Gibbs. So we'll keep an eye on
that. On the other cuts, it was announced today that undrafted
re-agent rookie out of Illinois Luke Altmyer was waived by the
Lions. Didn't have a very good game against Indianapolis
yesterday, let's face it. Josh Dobbs had the edge going into
that game and he played very well, at least compared to
Altmyer. Of course, Teddy Bridgewater retiring during
training camp, the Lions had to hurry up and sign Josh Dobbs.
And he looked pretty good, especially in the last game. So
he's the backup as of right now. And the Lions just have two
quarterbacks on the roster. Now the first waiver deadline, the
claims deadline is one o'clock tomorrow afternoon. After that,
you can announce who's on the practice squad. Now if Altmyer
doesn't get picked up, there's, I would say a very good
possibility that Luke Altmyer will be on the practice squad
roster for the Lions. Now, they'll be scouring the waiver
wire like every other team will, looking for a potential another
quarterback for the Lions. So we'll keep an eye on that. But
as of right now, this moment, just two running for two
quarterbacks rather, on the roster for the Lions, that being
Luke Altmyer, I'm sorry, that being Josh Dobbs. And also, of
course, Jared Goff, as Luke Altmyer was waived today by the
Lions. Now, here's probably one of the more surprising moves
that the Lions made today. Now, Jackson Meeks, he had one heck
of a preseason as well. He had a big game yesterday to probably
cement where he was going to be on the line if he was going to
make the Lions. He was definitely on the bubble. There
was still some doubt. But Jackson Meeks has made Detroit's
initial roster. And that was confirmed or confirmed just a
few minutes ago by the Detroit News. Meeks, of course, hauled
in that six yard touchdown pass against Indianapolis in the
season finale. He's had, he's had a great training camp. He
played his way on the roster. But the surprising thing is he
he edged out Tyler Conklin as the third tight end. Now, Tay
Martin made the team for the Lions as a wide receiver. And
that's kind of surprising too, because Greg Dorch was waived
today by the Lions. That surprises me a little bit. He
was brought up, or he was signed rather, in the offseason, more
than likely to be a pre agent, or I'm sorry, not a pre, a kick
read special teams returner for the Lions. I thought he was
going to be their punt returner, kickoff returner. But
he was waived along with Tom Kennedy. I thought maybe
Kennedy might be on the bubble to make the team. I thought
Kennedy being more versatile. I thought he had a shot to make
it. But he's out. Tay Martin is in. So the big news for the
Lions on the receiver core is that Jackson Meeks, he's thought
of as a little more versatile. He can play that third tight end.
But don't be surprised if you see him, maybe in the slot or
maybe on third down packages, four wide, who knows. But
congratulations to Jackson Meeks, who made it for the Lions
as the third tight end. Now, one of the other positions that we
were keeping an eye on for the Lions was on the offensive line,
especially at center. Now we talked about it. Seth
McLaughlin, and Drew Scruggs. We weren't sure if either, you
had the inside track to be the starting center for the Lions
until Kate Mays comes back. He'll be back probably well,
he's going to probably be out at least till week five, which I
wouldn't be surprised if he's out until after the bye week for
the Lions. Well, it came down to Seth McLaughlin. How good of a
preseason was he going to have? He didn't look very sharp in my
opinion for the Lions. But he did enough to make the roster as
he made it and Mason Miller. He was let go by the Lions today.
So again, congratulations to Seth McLaughlin. He made the
roster for the Lions as of right now. And again, we talked about
the practice squad. Don't be surprised if Mason Miller is
picked up and signed to the Lions practice squad unless he's
picked up on the waiver wire by another team. So that might have
been a surprise as well. I know Miller, I thought he had a
pretty good game. He was moved over to center for the Lions
against Indianapolis. And I thought he played pretty well.
And he's played all the positions as a backup. So a
little bit surprising there. But Seth McLaughlin did enough to
make that final roster for the Lions. So we'll keep an eye on
that. So big names made some surprising cuts for the Lions.
But it's starting to take shape for that season opener against
the New Orleans Saints. All right, that's going to do it for
this edition of Lions Digest. And again, a reminder, we invite
