Lions forced into IMPOSSIBLE decisions....
Sep 5, 2026
All right, with the season opener just a little over a week away and that Super Bowl window
for the Lions still open here in 2026, head coach Dan Campbell has got some nearly impossible
decisions to make as he's going to have to count on some rookies and some inexperienced
in some key roles heading into the start of the season. Now we're going to dive into that
and the implications of all of that on this edition of Lions Digest. Hey everybody, yours
truly Captain Lou here. Want to take a moment as we always do to welcome those of you that are
checking us out for the first time here at Lions Digest and we also invite you to hit that subscribe
button. Help us get to our goal this weekend, 500 subscribers as we roll into that season opener
against the Saints on September 13th. All right, we talked about it. Dan Campbell, he and Brad Holmes
had some big decisions to make in the offseason heading into training camp and now with the season
opener and they're going to have to rely on some young guns, some inexperienced, some rookies in
some key roles here in this 2026 season. It all starts out first off on the offensive line. Blake
Miller, he was drafted out of Clemson in the starting role. He's going to be pushed into the
right tackle position, one of the anchors on that offensive line. Now he had a lot of experience at
Clemson, started almost 60 games, almost not really a rookie. College is a lot different than the pro
level, we know that, so he's going to get baptism of fire for the Lions on the right side. Panay
Sewell moved over to the left as you already know, taking over for Taylor Decker who was
released by the Lions, so a little bit different for him but he's an all-pro, he can handle it.
The question is, can Blake Miller handle the speed? Now he's going to go up against starters,
not reserves as he did in the preseason, so a big big role for Miller and for the Lions
helping to protect Jameer Gibbs. Not only that, helping protect one of the last of a dying
breed, a pocket passer, and that's Jared Goff. They want to help him get to that 4,000-yard plateau
which will mean plenty of victories for the Lions. Now I think Jared Goff is still going to do it
with Blake Miller because I have a lot of faith in Blake Miller at that right tackle position,
that's why I'm going to roll with him and I'm going to trade yes that Jared Goff is going to
get over 4,000 yards again this year as I'm going to trade with our brand new partner here on Lions
Digest and that's Kelshi. Now remember, with Kelshi, you're trading directly against other
users, your peers, it's not the traditional sports book. You're buying yes or no contracts
on outcomes of events like sporting events, sport, you know, games, politics, even the weather. Now
if you take a look at the graph with Jared Goff to get to 4,000 yards, most folks above average
are confident he's going to do so as well so I'm going to lay $25 when I trade. I'm going to trade
$25 that yes, he's going to get to 4,000 yards and if you do that you see the return right there
41.10. Why $25 you might add? Well, if you're interested in trying out Kelshi, use the link
in the description and make sure you use the promo code DigestNFL. When you trade $25 using
that promo code, you're going to get $25 added instantly to your account. That's Kelshi. The
football season is starting right around the corner and all the games are traded on Kelshi.
All right, some of the other names that the Lions are going to be counting on
that are rookies or inexperienced, especially on the offensive side of the ball,
is going to be what appears to be our brand new Knuckles. Now it's not written in stone,
but boy Jacob Saylors has had one heck of a preseason for the Lions. He stepped in at the
end of the year last year and was able to take the kick returns. He took over that duty for the
Lions and did pretty well. Well, with the offseason injuries, the training camp injuries and whatnot,
and the trade of David Montgomery to the Texans, Jacob Saylors looks like he could be that new
Knuckles to complement Sonic, that being Jameer Gibbs. Now this is going to be a lot to ask for
the second year player for the Lions. Can he step in and do that? And it's a big leap. He's
going to jump over. It appears to me I have more faith in him than I have over Shion Bakke. So he's
going to do dual roles as listening to Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. He's probably still going to
handle the kickoff return duties for the Lions. So this is a big ask for someone like Jacob
Saylors to step right in. Now he had 190 yards in the preseason, but that's preseason. Last year
with him and Bakke, they combined for what, 29 yards, I think seven carries. So this is a big
step up, a big question mark. Could be impossible for the Lions. We'll have to wait and see. Now
speaking of rookies that are going to have to be asked to do a lot for the Lions, what about
Derek Moore, the second round draft pick out of the University of Michigan? He's going to be asked,
he's going to be in a rotating situation for the Lions. And if his health holds out, they're going
to ask him to do a lot. He's going to spell Woonham and also Aidan Hutchinson. Now imagine
the Lions signed DJ Woonham on the free agent contract in the offseason, but they knew they
needed a lot more than that. So they went after Derek Moore with that second round pick. They
traded up for Moore. So with that comes maybe a little extra pressure for the outside linebacker
slash edge rusher for the Lions coming in. So that's going to be a key question for the Lions.
Can he step up? Now here's probably, besides Blake Miller, the offensive tackle for the Lions,
here's the biggest question mark and the biggest worry really that I have for the Lions. And that
of course is the beleaguered defensive backfield. And that's where we're going to really have to
count on the rookie fifth round draft pick out of Texas A&M, Keith Abney the second. Now we've
talked a lot about him in the preseason. Kind of reminds me a little bit of Brian Branch. He's got
that swagger. He makes the big plays, but he also makes some that are a little bit on the silly
side. He's had to share penalties in the offseason, but he's going to be asked to step right in. Now
with the release of Terryon Arnold, it really created a void at that right corner back spot
for the Lions. Now DJ Reed's going to start at the left side, but he's questionable. He's got
lingering injuries. It seems like he always has lingering injuries. And Rakia Sin has stepped in
last season he did. And right now he may take over for Keith Abney, but you're going to see a lot
out of Keith Abney coming up here in this regular season in the opener. Thrust in a fifth round
draft pick, thrust right into a starting role for the Lions. And one other rookie that could see
some action that had a dynamite spring or training cap rather for the Lions is Skylar Hill Howard.
Howard the sixth round draft pick. He played admirably in the preseason, worked his way
onto the roster, and is impressing the Lions coaching staff every day. He might get some
playing time as well. So it begs the question that I want to ask you here before we go today.
Who do you think is going to have the biggest impact for the Lions in 2026? Is it going to be
Blake Miller, Derek Moore, Jacob Saylor, or Keith Abney? Let us know in the comments section. I'd
love to hear what you have to say on that. So again, rookies are being asked to make some big
contributions for the Lions in 2026. Hey, I want to remind everybody to a little programming note
for the Lions as or for the Lions Digest. We're going to have a weekly live preview show previewing
the upcoming game and we're going to start out this Thursday coming up seven o'clock Eastern

our live show next Thursday seven o'clock right here on Lions Digest. All right that's going to
