AI GeneratedThe Pittsburgh Steelers have made a surprising roster move by releasing former starting linebacker Alandon Roberts. This decision has sparked confusion among fans and analysts due to Roberts' strong preseason performance and his specialized run-stopping abilities. The team is currently navigating a tight deadline to finalize its 53-man roster, with further trades and cuts expected.
We have some breaking news.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have just made more moves this time,
making a move that is not only surprising,
but goes to show what their plan is going to be
as we approach the 6 p.m. deadline,
as they have just released a very notable name.
I'm gonna break down exactly who that is
and discuss why fans, a lot of fans,
are pretty upset or rather surprised with the move.
But not only that, we have some rumblings
about trades on the horizon for the Steelers.
It's gonna be a crazy next few hours.
We're gonna keep you up to date every step of the way.
But before we get into it,
very quick reminder to hit that subscribe button.
Now, Jack, there's a lot to go over today
as the Steelers continue to make moves.
You had a video earlier this morning on moves.
They just made more moves.
There are gonna be more moves to come later today,
but let's start with this here.
The Steelers have released former starting linebacker,
Alandon Roberts.
Now, obviously, Roberts is a former Steeler.
Last year, played a lot of games with the Raiders.
But a lot of fans, and we think back to this preseason even
and just the training camp in general,
he was pretty impressive.
And at all the moves they could have made,
I didn't necessarily expect Alandon Roberts
to be the one who was released at least this early.
You can see here from Alex DeZora,
I know he played deep into preseason action,
but this is surprising.
Maybe they'll yo-yo him back like other veterans
or put him on the practice squad as a veteran exception.
So there is ways to, of course, make it work, I guess.
But Jack, I just wanna get your initial thoughts on it.
Someone I thought was gonna definitely make the team,
obviously, a former starter,
has shown the ability to start, clearly, Omar Khan.
And obviously, now Mike McCarthy.
They have different plans regarding linebacker position.
Yeah, they really do.
This one comes as a major surprise.
Like you mentioned, some of the other cuts
of the Steelers have made.
None of those names that they have let go
have been much of a surprise.
This was absolutely a surprise to me.
I thought, you bring back Alandon Roberts
just a few weeks ago to be on that 53-man roster.
He brings a type of run-stopping ability
that not many other linebackers on the current roster
really have, like a Peyton Wilson.
You're not gonna get that run-stopping ability from him.
Patrick Queen, Cole Holcomb, Carson Bruner.
This comes as a major surprise,
because he brings something that you really don't have
on the roster anymore.
Like Alex mentioned on that tweet,
I also wouldn't be surprised if they do bring him back.
But then, if you brought him back,
that'd be the second time you're gonna sign him
in two weeks.
So it's a head-scratcher, for sure.
Yeah, it is interesting.
Now, I'll trust Omar Khan's process for a little bit.
We're gonna have to see what happens after the deadline.
There's a lot of weird caveats to a lot of the moves
that are happening right now.
But kind of dive into it further here,
in case you're unfamiliar with Roberts.
You can see here, from Blitzburg as well,
why did the Steelers release Alandon Roberts?
Would have liked to have seen a Patrick Queen, Roberts,
Cole Holcomb, and Peyton Wilson rotation.
You obviously mentioned they have different skill sets.
Now, for Roberts, out of these names,
it kind of makes the most sense, I guess,
if they were gonna release one of them.
But again, you look at the stats, even last year.
This is not somebody who is a fringe player, right?
He is somebody who, at this point,
in 16 games started last year,
14 games started the year before,
15 games started the year...
Like, he has been a starter
throughout almost his entire career.
121 games started in 157 total games played.
He could have easily factored in,
and a lot of fans had him penciled in as a starter
this upcoming season, for the reasons that you mentioned.
And also, he's looked good in training camp
and in preseason.
It's not like he played poorly.
It's not like he had a bad camp.
That's where it's a little bit of a head-scratcher,
and everyone's calling it a surprising cut.
And they've made a lot of moves.
You covered some of them yesterday.
Obviously, they traded Broderick Jones as well,
which I think a little bit less surprising,
though I think they made out okay in the trade.
People are really surprised by this move,
especially those who are actually at training camp reporters
because they obviously see him every day.
They see the training camp.
I'm a little bit surprised about it,
especially as you look at the total team now
and kind of the way that both in the offensive
and defensive side of the ball that they're looking.
I, it's interesting.
Now, they do have enough depth
to where it's not gonna make the season a wash.
It's not gonna greatly affect the team,
but it is a surprising one,
especially where you look at some of the other options
they decided to, it's the first surprising move
of many to come.
Absolutely.
My first thought when I saw the tweet
was obviously that was a surprise.
I thought, like that tweet you mentioned,
that core four of Wilson, Queen, Holcomb, and Roberts,
that was gonna be what the Steelers
were gonna trot out week one against the Falcons.
I wonder if, and I had a video on this as well,
if this quarterback situation brought this to light
because if you hold onto four quarterbacks,
you're gonna have to let someone else go.
I did not think it was gonna be Roberts.
Maybe they really like Carson Bruner.
I mean, that's the only other, or Emily Harrison,
but I thought Emily Harrison was gonna possibly
be a cut-slash-trade candidate
here as we inch towards that 6 p.m. deadline,
but again, like I mentioned before,
this will probably be the most surprising cut that we see.
Knock on wood, maybe we'll see who else gets cut,
but I don't know why the Steelers brought him back
just to let him go again.
Yeah, and that is what a lot of people are talking about now.
Does that mean they're gonna keep Malik Harrison?
Do they see something that all of us don't?
I'm kinda hoping that isn't the case.
I'll hold onto that hope for a little bit,
but before we move on here,
it's a, you can see here,
just from other kind of fine details,
Atlanta Roberts is not subject to waivers.
It is officially termed a contract termination.
We have seen the Steelers do this before
with vested vets on one-year deals,
even some with small signing bonuses.
So we'll let it play out.
Again, 6 p.m. Eastern is when kind of the deadline is
for a lot of these moves.
I'm sure there's some ways.
It's not technically official yet.
There's obviously been a lot of reports about it,
but it is interesting.
Now, there was also this tweet, Jack, from Phillip Pony.
Take it with a grain of salt.
This Phillip Pony we're talking about here,
but he did say that the Steelers
could make multiple trades today.
Stay tuned.
Now, I don't know if this is his reporting
or him alluding to the obvious fact
that you might have to make some trades,
obviously, to keep the roster of 53 men and stuff like that.
I am curious now, more than anything,
especially after Roberts,
who they view internally as valuable,
because clearly it's a bit different than we do with Roberts.
I mean, Malik Harrison, if they decide to keep him,
do they view him?
Roberts is a starter in this league,
and I'm sure he'll get scooped up by somebody,
and I don't think it'll be the Steelers,
but we will let it play out.
But it does seem like there's potential
for trades on the horizon here.
I'm not talking, I mean, maybe.
It could be some big trades.
I would assume it might be some minor moves.
At the same time, after this one,
it almost makes you a little bit more excited
to see what their actual plan is,
because now they already went off the board a little bit
compared to what a lot of us expected,
at least with Roberts.
For sure.
Again, I see the Steelers could make multiple trades,
and I just go through this depth chart
of who could possibly be valuable,
because you would need a younger player,
like a Broderick Jones,
for a team to want to trade for him.
That Broderick Jones trade, honestly,
I love what the Steelers got back.
Being able to move up into day two
for a guy that seemed like he didn't really have
much future on the starting offensive line
for the Steelers was great.
For those names that could be traded,
I look at a guy like Caleb Johnson,
because he's in a weird spot with the team right now.
Right now, currently, the Steelers have him
at third on the depth chart.
That is not how he was playing through most of this preseason.
If anything, he was up behind Eli Heidenreich at times.
You have names like Travis Homer.
You have a name like who I really love,
who I think deserves a roster spot,
and Luke Nichols II.
I could see a guy like him getting traded.
Other than that, I mean, look at this roster.
Like you mentioned, we could absolutely be surprised.
I was not expecting Broderick Jones to be traded,
and he did, so we'll have to see as we go through today.
Yeah, Caleb Johnson, there's rumblings about him.
I forget the team, but there's been links to him
and other teams, maybe the Cowboys.
There's a lot of teams that are linked
to a lot of these names.
Let us know down below what your thoughts are on this.
More moves are happening as well,
and one final note on all of this,
you can see here from Steelers Depot,
not this will happen with Roberts and Larry specifically,
but moves today are not official until 6 p.m.
So the leaks, again, we'll wait until after 6 p.m.
We'll have a video for it.
Comment down below what your thoughts are on this,
and a couple of housecleaning things.
Davis and Levi Wentz, Jem and Davis and Levi Wentz
are both now off of the team.
In theory, at least there are two more roster cuts.
25 more moves, a bit less than that now,
but 25 more moves need to be made by today at 6 p.m.
It's gonna be a crazy day.
Thank you guys for watching.
