You've probably driven past thousands of hazardous material placards without giving them a second thought. But who are those colorful diamond-shaped signs really for? Truck drivers? Police? Firefighters?
The answer is all of the above, but they were designed primarily to help emergency responders quickly identify the primary transportation hazard before they ever open a valve, climb onto a railcar, or approach a damaged tanker.
Every color, symbol, and number has a purpose. The symbol and color identify the type of hazard, the number at the bottom identifies the hazard class or division, and the four-digit UN/NA identification number identifies the specific hazardous material or standardized transportation description.
One of the biggest surprises is that those four digits are not a code where each digit has its own meaning. The entire number identifies the material.
Hazmat placards are used on highway tankers, railcars, cargo containers, and many bulk shipments throughout North America and much of the world. As cargo moves from truck to train, onto a ship, and back to another truck, the hazard stays with the shipment, so the same placard provides the same critical information every step of the journey.
