In mid-July, NASA unveiled the first renderings of Starship's docking system for the Artemis III mission.
At first glance, it looks like a familiar piece of space hardware—after all, spacecraft have been docking for decades.
But look closer, and you'll find one of the boldest engineering innovations SpaceX has attempted.
The challenge isn't just connecting Orion to a Starship that dwarfs it in both size and mass. It's also about rewriting the rules of spacecraft docking itself. That single design decision could reshape orbital refueling, enable more flexible rescue missions, and lay the foundation for building permanent infrastructure around Earth, the Moon, and eventually Mars.

The Nose-Cone Docking Port Controversy
It's hard to overstate how important docking is to NASA's Artemis program. Without it, the core architecture of getting astronauts from Orion to the lunar surface and back simply does not work. And the next Artemis mission, scheduled for 2027, will be the first to show how this complex technology will be tested on a large scale.
A recent NASA rendering offered our clearest look yet at how this will happen, showing Orion docking directly with the tip of Starship's nose.
At first glance, that doesn't seem surprising. But for years, this exact design has been one of the biggest engineering debates surrounding the Human Landing System.
The reason is simple.
On a standard reusable Starship, the very tip of the nose isn't empty. It's occupied by the liquid oxygen and liquid methane header tanks. These smaller tanks play a critical role during atmospheric reentry and the dramatic belly-flop landing maneuver, helping control propellant flow and the vehicle's center of mass.
