He believes Lombard is simply experiencing \"the yips\" and that benching a 21-year-old would damage his confidence. The speaker emphasizes Lombard's superior raw talent and athleticism, urging the team and fans to remain patient.
Is benching George Lombard jr the answer you guys let me know what you think down in the
comments now Lombard passed six games he has six evers through his first 14 games he had one error
Lombard was playing a fantastic fantastic shortstop initially when he was brought up now
he's botching the ball left and right whether throwing ever fielding it whatever it is
it doesn't look good over there it's also struggling offensively as a rookie that's
gonna happen is benching George Lombard the answer now I'm not saying losing his job
no I'm just saying is benching him for a game or two the answer for the New York Yankees and I
have an answer for you guys my answer is absolutely not no don't even touch it don't let it Evan
Roberts made a great point today on on his show don't let it get in his head his young players
21 years old he looked really good through his first few weeks up here don't even let it don't
even flirt with the idea and thank god this is one thing that Aaron Boone and I agree on it's not to
bench him because Boone talked about it Boone said no he's gonna play through it as as he should he's
gotta learn he's gotta play through it I simply think the kid just has the ips I know like that's
not a good answer I just think he has it he's the the his athletic ability what he's able to do he's
got a really great arm he's got a really great arm we saw through his first 14 games really good
glove just past six games six evers I get it but I just think he just just has the ips and he's
gotta snap out of it now there's a difference between him and Anthony Volpe I just think raw
talent Lombard has more than Volpe just my opinion has a better arm than Volpe he's faster than
Volpe more explosive did you see him how he runs the bases Lombard he just runs them so swiftly
the way how he cuts around the bases it's a joy to watch it's nice and he's fast on top of it
that's very important to have on your team most guys when they hit a ball like that that's a
double for them for him it was a triple and he earned that triple he's just he's such a good
baserunner he's fast off I get it offensively he's struggling but my point is he has the
intangibles he has the ability to be a very good baseball player and he's a 21 year old kid who's
just going through it right now and he's gonna figure it out in the minor leagues he did not
have an issue defensively in fact he's been major league ready defensively for quite a few years now
it's just the bat had to catch up and the bat did now he's going through you know the ebbs and flows
of a major league stint I just don't think we have to be so aggressive and say yes Benjam I think
that's silly especially young player like that you can't as Evan said you can't get in his head
that's the worst thing that you could do and they're not they stuck to Anthony Volpe for so
long and then even with Dominguez they they gave him a lot of playing time this year they're giving
Spencer Jones playing time this year they give their guys opportunities it's one thing I gotta
say they they outside of Oswald Peraza sorry bring that name up I'm still bitter about that they give
their guys opportunities they're gonna continue to do that with Lombard and he's the one player
for me Dominguez I felt the same way but not everybody else did for me Lombard is one of the
few players that I'm gonna be very very patient with very patient with what everybody has to
understand he started last year in low a got promoted to high a got promoted to double a
I believe he started last year in low a and then this year began the year in double
promoted to triple a then it was like hey we need him he's playing well down there we need him he
earned his spot most definitely he's just going through it right now and that's fine and everybody
has to understand he's a freaking rookie he's a young kid he just he hasn't even played a full
month yet up here they called him up this month we're still in the same month where they called
him up and I get it it's it's a lot of errors and it's such a short amount of time but I don't
think that's indicative of him as a player I just think it's because something's going on up there
something's happening when listen I never played minor minor league baseball I never played
obviously major league I didn't play minors I don't play majors but the one thing I I had a
coach who did play pro ball and he and he would tell me he would say Joey listen you have all the
ability in the world that's what he told that's what he told me listen and I was I was like 13
years old okay so relax but he told me he goes you have the size speed strength to be a really
good ball player the issue is between your ears that's what he told me all the time it was a
confidence thing and now with Lombard a guy who's been told he's been great his entire life
he probably has been now made a couple errors up here in the major leagues maybe he's getting into
his own head a little bit and that could be the problem and I think that is the problem I don't
think this is oh he's not a good player and and he stinks and this is who he is not in fact I don't
think this is who he is at all not one bit I really don't maybe this is me just being in denial
wouldn't be the first time I just don't think this is him as a player he's going to be okay
he'll get out of this he has to he has to I think he's going to be fine I think everything with
people freaking out about him is an overreaction I really do and I overreact a lot I'll be the
first to admit that I think this is an overreaction with Lombard but it's such a hot topic we had to
talk about it today we had to I've been stupid not to so hopefully in Boston well versus Boston
hopefully he picks it up starts to hit again starts playing solid defense hopefully he does that
because guys those first week or two he he was I went to the game against I believe it was
August 5th his it was his second game of the season I went to that game he made he made quite
like two or three awesome plays diving play I think he turned two on his own he looked so good
something happened to where it's he hit a little snag and that's okay it's fine now he's the first
player in history to make this many errors well not first player I think since 1915 to make this
many errors in like six games or something I saw us that that's that's that's crazy but
when it's all said and done with Lombard I truly believe he's gonna win multiple gold gloves and I
get it that award really isn't it doesn't mean much and it hasn't meant much for a really long
time now when Tino Martinez didn't win it the year Palmera won it that was a joke anyway I was a kid
at that time I was I think I was like in kindergarten or something at that time where I wasn't
even in grade school yet but I think he's gonna win a few I think he's gonna be a very good hitter
the one thing with Lombard is sometimes he'll hit a snag he's done this in the minors he'll hit a
snag then he picks it up he figures it out he picks it up I think the same thing will happen here
I'm not scared I'm not worried I think he's gonna be just fine and I want you guys to know that he's
gonna be just fine please this isn't like Anthony Volpe he's a lot I think he has a lot more talent
I think he's a better player than Anthony listen Anthony's hitting home runs constantly down there
right now a couple opposite field jobs good good for him he can maybe be our second baseman next
year good for him maybe less pressure judging by the new CBA we'll see we'll see what happens
with that but right now Anthony Volpe has two years of control left by the way them sending
him down maybe it adds a year I'm not sure it could add it could have added a year so so maybe
he has three but if it doesn't it's two more years left on this team I think that's nuts
time goes by so fast but with George Lombard Jr. we need to relax he's gonna be okay
he has all the raw ability to be a very good baseball player he just has the yips
