The race to win San Francisco's congressional seat. It is heating up.
Recent polls show the election could be a close one come November.
And tonight one candidate, Connie Chan, is picking up some key endorsements. KTVU's Amber
Lee was at her event this evening, joins us live tonight from San Francisco with the story. Amber.
Mike, tonight Connie Chan was joined by South Bay Congressman Ro Khanna.
She tells me she's excited by the energy he brings to her campaign.
We also reached out to her opponent, Scott Wiener, and his supporters.
San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan takes her campaign for the congressional seat,
long held by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, before a crowd of supporters on Monday night.
The event is described as a town hall focused on the priorities of young voters.
Chan shares the stage with South Bay Congressman Ro Khanna, who's endorsing her.
Connie has the right values for this district. And the fact that she's building a broad coalition,
a multiracial coalition, also reflects San Francisco.
Chan says she's focused on issues including Medicare for all,
affordable child care, along with free community college education.
We understand making sure that billionaire and their corporation pay their fair share
builds a better future for our young people so that there is actually funding for them,
for their education, for their health care, and homes and transit.
California State Senator Scott Wiener, Chan's opponent, declined our request for an interview,
but his campaign issued a statement which says in part,
Scott Wiener has spent his time in public service bringing down the cost of living
and building more housing. And it's why he will actually put working families first
when he gets to Congress.
Scott's been directly responsible for building thousands of affordable and like
market rate, just all kinds of homes in San Francisco and across the state.
This lone protester outside the town hall tells me he plans to vote for Wiener.
It upsets me when people call Connie Chan progressive,
when she opposes all of these like progressive things.
This audience member tells me she'll be voting for Chan. She points to labor union support.
I'm really excited to have an Asian American woman representing me.
I think she stands for working people in San Francisco. She's a San Franciscan.
She's worked in the city a long time.
Why should someone vote for you versus Scott?
Well, look, our record has shown as well as our agenda and our plan
really is focusing on the working people.
Audience members submitted written questions to Chan during the public meeting.
A group called Grow SF has launched Grow USA to support Wiener for Congress,
saying that he has spent his career taking on difficult problems and fighting to deliver results.
