It's Hispanic Heritage Month.
It may have wrapped up, but celebrating the talent
and contributions of the Latino community
does not have to end there.
This morning, we're highlighting a Bay Area artist
who's making her mark in music, entertainment,
and academia.
Fremont native Catherine Flores blends pop
and Latin pop into a sound that's uniquely
her own.
From performing at San Francisco's Outside
Lands Music Festival to her work with the
Grammys, and she is getting ready to release
a new single called Post Show later this month.
We welcome to the show this morning, Catherine Jones.
She joins us to talk more about this.
Catherine, thanks for joining us this morning.
It's great to be here.
All right.
So, Catherine, tell us a little bit about your music.
You built your career right here in the Bay Area,
and you do have local roots here.
How does that all blend in to the music that you put out?
I think that I just love crossing all kinds of genres together.
And growing up in Fremont in the Bay Area,
being a Mexican-American woman,
I think that I just love the ability to cross genres
from country to pop to Latin pop and that's
all really been part of my style and the music I put out all right
and you've also you performed at
the Fremont Festival of the Arts recently took
the stage at Outside Lands how's that been for you
it's been amazing it's just awesome to see
also friends and family and people from the community
come out and also enjoy the show as well
and really support me there yeah you've also back
in 2021 and 2024 you wrote music for an adaptation
of Shakespeare performed live at Yosemite. Yes.
What was that about? Shakespeare
and Yosemite performs on stage in Yosemite on Earth Day and
Shakespeare's birthday 90-minute comedy adaptations that are eco-based
and so I became a songwriter
and a singer for those shows as well
for environmental justice purposes. And you've
also spent time at the Grammys as in like
the press room interviewing some of the folks at
the Grammys. Tell us a little bit about that.
What was that like? Oh, it was so much fun. I got to
interview SZA, Lola Young, John Legend.
It's just amazing being able, as a songwriter and artist
myself, ask them the questions that I want to know.
So what was it like? Did they give you any
cool information you could share with us about how
that may influence every time you step up to the
microphone? I think just sing your story
and sing it the way that you want to do it also. And just
don't be afraid to write what you want to write.
You are working toward your PhD in English at UC
Davis tell us a bit about that what you know what
your other plan is I would
love to you know I think
that overall you shouldn't have to pick one or the
other you can do the PhD you can
be a singer-songwriter and my dissertation
also blends like environmental justice how
the story tell through music as well
all right so you have an upcoming single
called Post Show that we mentioned a
moment ago coming out this month here it's
a follow-up track to She's Leo tell
fans what they can expect to hear from this and you're going
to be performing that single here
today i'll actually be performing Loving Yosemite yeah yeah
but yeah so give us a preview of the
single the Post Show single that for folks that are fans of yours
or that want to listen to your
music yeah Post Show was co-produced
also by my producers Tyler and uh Joe as well um it's
something about enjoying the intimate moments whether it's
a relationship whether it's friends
or family but those are also as exciting as the show itself
and so as the show itself and by the
what you're working with uh your name
is i'm John Thompson John Thompson you're gonna be playing uh
bass today uh when Catherine Flores before uh performs for us
and so i want you to i want the
folks to hear what music that you're going
to uh you have for them a Fremont native here that's you
know getting to getting working yourself up to the national stage
so we want to hear what Fremont's
putting out there i'm gonna let you have
the stage amazing thank you all
right last summer they were
Fighting for the same cause
