Fig Trees: Why They're Not Fruiting, Root Pruning & Harvest Protection from Birds & Squirrels

After reviewing my potted nursery stock ahead of a local pop-up sale, I address long-term container management. Using my ten-year-old potted Smith fig as proof, I demonstrate that annual root pruning may not be necessary if you properly rejuvenate fig trees by cutting back 50% of the previous year's wood each winter.

10 years ago, I published a video repotting the trunk air layer of my Smith fig tree. Since then, it's been growing in a 10-gallon-sized-pot. Let's say it took 3 years for the air layer to fill the 10-gallon pot with roots. That's 7 years of no root pruning and strong annual production.

When a fig tree fails to fruit, the underlying issue is rarely a lack of sunlight, water, or fertilizer, but rather a hormonal imbalance that favors vegetative growth over crop production. Severe freeze damage that kills growth back to the soil, as well as improper topping cuts, trigger hyper-vigorous, unproductive suckers and water shoots. To tilt the hormonal balance back toward fruiting, you must protect the top third of the branches through the winter to preserve established, mature wood. When controlling a tree's size, avoid shortening stems; instead, prune entire overgrown branches down to their lowest origin point to allow the tree to maintain a balanced structure that reliably sets high-quality fruit.
