How to Make Your Fig Tree Healthier: Watering, Mosaic Virus, Rust & MORE
In today's video, I walk you around my fig orchard to share show-and-tell updates on my trees before diving into actionable advice on keeping your fig trees healthy.
A central focus of this update is fig rust, a fungal disease that hit my potted trees particularly hard this year because of relentless rain, tight spacing, and hand watering. I walk through how rust impairs photosynthesis and fruit quality, how growers in humid southern climates need to adjust their pruning compared to northern growers, and why simple fixes like switching to direct soil irrigation, spacing out pots, and cleaning up fallen leaves can prevent fungal spores from spreading to next year’s crop.

I also address one of the most common topics in fig growing: Fig Mosaic Virus (FMV). I explain that while nearly every fig tree carries FMV, you can minimize its severity and keep your trees thriving by strengthening their immune systems with rich compost, proper nutrition, and rejuvenation pruning—using my near-symptom-free Ischia Black (UCD) fig variety as evidence.
