It was kind of against my will.
I was living with a partner at the time.
I was at work and he texted me a picture of her
at the shelter and said, can I bring this cat home?
I had never been around a cat before.
So I was like, absolutely not, I'm not doing this.
And he adopted her anyway.
I got home from work and it was just her
and I in the apartment.
My name is Sydney and this is Bean's story for GeoBeats.
She was staring at me and I was like, uh-uh, nope.
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not doing it.
So I ran into the bedroom.
I ran probably faster than I've ever ran in my life.
And I slammed the door and locked it.
I waited for hours until my ex-partner got home
so that he could interact with her
because I wasn't gonna do it.
But after a couple of weeks,
I was able to get comfortable with her.
As far as her backstory,
we didn't have too much information.
She was brought to the shelter.
She was left there.
Someone dropped her off.
There's definitely things in the day-to-day
that you would see that kind of make you think
maybe it wasn't the best environment
before we adopted her, but no information, honestly.
She goes between sassy grandma and angsty teen with her dad,
my husband, and she adores him.
She, in her eyes, he can do no wrong.
She lays with him every single night.
And then when he's gone at work,
she lays on his clothes or anything that smells like him.
She's 14.5 pounds right now.
They wanna get her down to 11.5.
For a cat, it's very strategic
because if they lose too much too fast,
it can cause different organ failures and things like that.
So we have to pace it out, which is tough.
Most nights, anytime between one to four,
I'm woken up by her scratching my face to feed her.
Frank, we adopted him to help her to play more
and move around more.
And they play fight every day.
With my husband or any of our friends that come over,
she puts on this facade of like,
I'm the sweetest girl in the world
and I can never do anything wrong.
But I see the other side.
So I'm a little offended, but I think it's all love.
We have been working with different vets.
It's kind of ebbed and flowed a little bit.
We've had her on multiple different diets and even workouts.
I've tried to put her in the bathtub,
holding her with a life vest, trying to get her to swim.
That has not worked.
She just sat there.
But we use the laser pointer almost every night
because she likes playing with that.
And it was actually a big reason we bought a house
because we wanted her to have more room to run around.
We call her the queen of the castle.
She has to have eyes on everything
that happens at all times.
She gets jealous if my husband's
giving me more attention than her.
If we're laying on the couch watching TV,
if I'm like laying on his shoulder,
she will get up and lay on his chest.
But she'll curve her body to where her back's on my face.
So I'm out of the picture now.
And she knows what she's doing.
The living room couch she loves.
She will make it clear that it's her spot.
She'll sit on you until basically I can't breathe
because she's on my chest.
So she knows I'm going to get up.
And then she sits there.
If it's Frank, our other cat,
she's batting at him just until he's like,
okay, fine, it's yours, I'm sorry.
If my husband's away on a trip,
she'll realize, oh, okay, so my main human's gone.
So now I'm going to have to, you're my new main human.
She'll let me pet her for maybe five minutes.
And then she's like, okay, that's enough.
