Great Heat (大暑, Dàshǔ) marks the final solar term of summer and one of the most significant turning points in the traditional Chinese calendar. Although it is the hottest period of the year, it is also the moment when nature begins preparing for the coming of autumn.

In this first member lesson, we explore why the Jǐng (井) Hexagram in the Yì Jīng (Book of Changes) is associated with Great Heat, how the ancient well-field system (井田) reflected the relationship between water, community, and agriculture, and why seasonal customs developed around this time of year.

We also examine traditional dietary practices during Great Heat from the perspective of Chinese medicine, and the cultural beliefs surrounding seasonal illness, humidity, and rituals that marked the transition toward autumn.

This lesson is part of our complete Great Heat series, where we study the Twenty-Four Solar Terms as an integrated system connecting Chinese language, philosophy, medicine, and everyday life.
