Members-onlyChinese Wisdom for Living with the Seasons | Xiǎo Shǔ, the Solar Terms, and Everyday Life
Xiǎo Shǔ (小暑), or Minor Heat, marks the beginning of one of the hottest periods of the year in the traditional Chinese calendar. But in Chinese culture, a solar term is far more than a seasonal marker—it reflects a way of understanding the relationship between human life and the natural world.
In this lesson, Mr. He explains why the Twenty-Four Solar Terms (二十四節氣) have been central to Chinese philosophy for centuries. Through the meaning of the characters 小 and 暑, the lesson explores how language, culture, and the rhythms of nature are connected.
The second half of the lesson introduces the traditional understanding of seasonal living: why Xiǎo Shǔ is associated with caring for the heart, protecting the spleen and stomach, and adapting daily habits to the changing climate.
This lesson is part of the HECHINESE membership series, where Chinese language, characters, philosophy, and traditional culture are studied as one integrated system.
