We Installed 36 Solar Panels + 40kWh of Batteries: Can We Go Off-Grid?

Can 36 solar panels and 40kWh of battery storage take our fully electric home off-grid? After living with the system through summer, winter, cloudy days and overnight testing, we finally have some real-world answers.

Our property runs entirely on electricity, experiences regular power outages and is limited by a 63-amp single-phase grid connection. Rather than sizing the system for our current usage, we designed it around where we expect the property—and our energy consumption—to be in the next five years.
Our system includes:
• 36 × 475W AIKO solar panels
• 17.1kW of total solar capacity
• Two ANKER SOLIX X1 battery stacks
• 40kWh of battery storage
• Two 6kW inverters
• Whole-house blackout backup
In this video, we break down how the system was designed, why we chose two battery stacks, how whole-house backup works, what happens during an outage and how much power we still need from the grid.
We also share our real-world summer and winter results, what happened to our electricity bills, how shading affected production and whether 40kWh of storage is actually enough to get us through the night.

Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe speaker details the installation of a 17.1kW solar array and a modular Anker Solix X1 battery system to transition an inefficient electric home toward off-grid capability. While the system eliminates electricity bills in summer and provides whole-house backup during outages, winter performance is limited by shading and poor insulation, requiring strategic grid supplementation.
