The Secret Behind The Stone Butterfly Swimming Technique: Don'T Train Until You Know This

Perhaps the most important skill to master in swimming is the butterfly kick. I say this for three reasons:

1- You are legally permitted to use the butterfly kick for up to 15 meters after each turn in freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly races.
2- It strengthens your core, thereby improving your stability across all swimming strokes.
3- The butterfly kick is used in all four strokes following turns (including during the breaststroke pull-out).

The most important thing is to practice it whenever you have the chance. Coaches often let you choose which kick to perform during a kicking set; whenever possible, challenge yourself to do more butterfly kicking. It will be more difficult than other kicks—especially at first—but I promise it will get much easier and is well worth the effort.

In the butterfly stroke, the most common technique involves performing two kicks per stroke cycle. This can be challenging for some beginners. To master this, you need to kick quickly; practice kicking at a fast pace with a kickboard to simulate the actual butterfly motion. Try alternating between a powerful kick and a smaller, faster kick. This builds muscle memory and helps you swim a better butterfly.

In the water, gravity is constantly pulling you down, which can throw off the balance of your kick. The beauty of the butterfly kick is that the more balanced it is, the more efficient it becomes. Practicing the kick on your back, on your side, and on your stomach can help improve your technique, leading to a more balanced and efficient kick. Remember to exert strong effort on both the down-kick and the up-kick. As we mentioned in the freestyle kicking video, actually seeing your kick can help you improve it. For this drill, it is better to wear fins so you can ride higher in the water and get a better view of your kick.
