It's now. Right now, Fox five News at 11, a five year old boy fighting for his
life after being hit by a car while riding a scooter. Police are revealing
in southeast and loved ones paying tribute to a fallen D. C. Police officer
home family of Officer Terry Bennett, keeping his legacy alive. Fox five News
at 11 starts now
developing tonight, a five year old critically injured after being hit by a
car while riding a scooter in southeast D. C. Police say it happened
yesterday evening on Ridgecrest Court. Investigators say the driver was
speeding at the time of the accident and fled the scene. The five year old
is currently recovering at the hospital. No arrests have been made, but
officials say the suspect was driving a dark blue Nissan with Virginia tag
number T. A. K. 9548.
Turning to weather. This is a live look from our Fox five Sky cam at National
Harbor. Looks like a nice night tonight for your Saturday. We're gonna bring in
Jen here. A great start to the weekend. Should we be looking at certain showers
maybe tomorrow or just some more humidity? More humidity. And you know
what? Focus on the sunshine out there and then think about the rain chance
secondary because overall tomorrow is not gonna be a bad day. I mean, it's
summer. This is what happens when you get summer. Regina, you get some of
these afternoon showers and storms that pop up. But what we're gonna be looking
at for tomorrow is still gonna be a nice day. It's just gonna feel a little
bit more summer, and we're gonna feel more summer like as we go through each
day. And by Tuesday, we're gonna look at the chance for some stronger storms to
return. But here's the view outside our camera out of the capital wheel. Pretty
quiet conditions right now. Temperature 73 degrees. It feels like the actual
temperature, despite the fact the humidity has been climbing now what we
will see, especially as we go into Monday and Tuesday. Humidity is really
going to be spiking, and we'll see those two points going back up into the
upper sixties and the seventies. But right now our temperatures in the
sixties for a good chunk of the area, 69 in Fredericksburg, the same money
Dallas and then 65 degrees in Leonard Town. So tomorrow morning you wake up
to mostly clear skies, but you're gonna notice a bit more moisture in the air.
As we look at those two points, there they are right now in the sixties and
some fifties to the north and east. That's when we talk about the humidity.
But as we look at satellite radar, we've got a little disturbance to the
northwest of us. As we go through the night, we will be dry, but maybe a
stray shower may be trying to pop up near Hager sound as we go through about
the next hour or two. But after that, things really fizzling out high
pressure and control that aerial pressure as well as that boundary
system pulling away. And that means better weather setting up for a lot of
regions as we go through down towards the south that have been dealing with
some heavy rainfall. But our planner for tonight, mostly clear tomorrow
morning sunshine to start maybe a stray shower right around the midday hours,
but a better chance will come later into the afternoon. We'll time that for
you in your future cast in just a few minutes. But for tomorrow afternoon,
there's a high 86 degrees southeast winds, partly cloudy skies, but for
tomorrow, just a little bit warmer. But today we were only at a high of 82
degrees. Regina average high is 90 will let you know we'll get closer to those
nineties and just a few minutes. All right, Jen. Well, a new deal is set to
provide National Guard troops deployed in the district a more permanent place
to live. The National Guard Bureau announcing the nearly $300 million deal
with company Placemaker. It will allow members to move into apartments until
now. They've been staying in hotels across the city. Troops have been in D.
C. For nearly a year after President Trump's emergency declaration are
expected to stay until 2029 community members coming together today to honor
Terry Bennett. The police officer killed earlier this year. He was hit
by an allegedly impaired driver on the side of I 6 95 two days before
Christmas and a two weeks later this Tuesday would have been Terry's 33rd
birthday. Fox five photojournalist Matthew Myers has a story from
Landsberg Park.
People can look at this and realize that you as just one person can make so
much change and so much impact.
We're there first district station to celebrate the Terry Bennett Day. It's a
community event that's been established by his family and also here in P. D. To
honor and recognize Officer Terry Bennett, who tragically lost his life
earlier this year in the line of duty. It's been a long journey planning and
to make sure everything goes seamlessly with his birthday. I'm happy that we
didn't lose sight of the reason for the day, which was to honor Terry and honor
him around his birthday. Seeing all these people out here from different
walks of life, even in the local community is just it's so fulfilling to
know that Terry had this much of an impact. Terry pledged himself to the
community as well as being an officer. I made a sign for people to pledge and
say that there will be a better person in the community and do the best that
they can.
I think that he will love this. He would appreciate that everybody's
pledged to be better because that's all he tried to do during his time that
Terry Bennett was a man of honor, a man of statute, very well celebrated and
respected in the district. I was Terry's supervisor on midnights when I
first got promoted.
He's really instrumentally helped me find my way around the first district.
Found out he coached just like I coach had a lot of things in common. Great
officer, better person, better person. The family is gonna come up as they
give the first ever Terry Bennett Scholarship recipient his award. I feel
that now out of the kids in the community, they look up to him. I have
received Terry Bennett's take the community that they live in and make
something more of it. Thanks to Terry, I was able to finish and graduate
college on time and get a bachelor degree. This is literally a dad was put
together just because someone did good in the community. He wasn't a
dignitary. He wasn't anybody that was just important to D. C. But he just was
important to his community and simple things like that can really make a
difference.
Now early voting is off to a slow start in Virginia with just one week left for
voters to get their ballots in ahead of the August 4th primaries. Voters are
deciding the candidates for U. S. Senate as well as house races and local
offices. Voter registration offices will be open again tomorrow. Early voting
ends on Saturday, August 1st. Pentagon also confirming the identity of one of
the soldiers killed in the Iranian strikes in Jordan. We're told 28 year
old Staff Sergeant Angel Rampersad was killed back on July 17th as the war in
Iran continues. So I want to bring in, uh, Sinan Azodi, uh, Sina Azodi, I
should say, assistant professor and director of the Middle East Studies
Master's program at George Washington University. Sina. Today we are seeing an
apparent pause in U. S. Iran strikes, but now Saudi Arabia and the Houthi
rebel rebel group have exchanged fires. So what can you tell us from today is
the conflict between the U. S. And Iran firing up tensions among other nearby
nations this week? Well, the Houthis are a, um, a group, a non state actor in
Yemen who have had for years and decades of conflict with the Saudis. Um,
the Houthis are aligned with Iran and Saudis are aligned with the United
States. And for a while in the first round of conflict, which started on
February 27th, the Houthis stayed out of the fight, um, largely stayed out of
the fight. But this time around, uh, it appears that they have imposed what
they have announced a blockade of Bab el Mandeb, another global, um, energy
chokehold, which, uh, threatens Saudi oil exports. And we saw that after the
Houthis announced this, the price of oil went up. The price of gas in our
region went up again s O. They can have an impact by closing that and add that
to the state of Hormuz, which is now closed by Iranians. And at the same
time, there's a blockade by the U. S. Navy there. So there's a lot of
pressure on global markets. And as far as Iran and the U. S. Is concerned that
as you pointed out, there is a pause in the exchanges between Iranians and
Americans. Now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he's expected to
visit the White House Monday. Israel has largely remained on the sidelines
since the early days of the conflict. But now there are reports President
Trump is considering asking Israel to re enter the campaign. So what do you
feel are the chances we could see Israel's return to escalation? I mean,
there's a possibility that Israelis may want to come back. But the first
time around, the Israelis were largely under a lot of pressure from the
Iranian missiles that were targeting Israel. At this point, that memorandum
of understanding that ended the conflict in all theaters is practically
falling apart. But the exchanges between Iranians and Americans and
Iranians have been very careful not to target the Israelis to keep them to
keep them out of the fight. The question whether they will enter the
conflict or not, I'm not really sure. But I think at this point that we are
talking Iranians and Americans, the fact that they have stopped exchanging
fire, I think this is a positive step. And hopefully with the mediation of
Pakistanis, Qataris and perhaps even Omani's, we could go back to the full
implementation of that memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US
and hopefully have a comprehensive piece and very quickly just to wrap up
here. But what does this mean for future negotiations? What could we be
expecting in these next couple of weeks? I think if there are talks ongoing
between Iranians and Americans, with the help of, as I said, Pakistanis and
Qataris, there has to be a first de-escalatory measures to stop the
exchanges, then go back to the implementation of memorandum of
understanding and hopefully, as I said, sign a comprehensive political
solution that ends the conflict instead of having a ceasefire. All right,
Zina, thank you so much for joining us.
Coming up, Berlin police sharing new details on a suspect wanted for a
deadly attack at a pride event.
What's poppin? Brand new whip, just hopped in. I got options. I can pass
that flight stop.
A manhunt now underway in Berlin, Germany, after a driver rammed into a
pride event. Police say the suspect has ties to Islamic circles. At least one
person is dead and 16 others hurt. Hundreds of thousands of people turned
out for festivities, some rushing in to save victims after the van, the van
attack concert and other celebrations were canceled.
Some signs of hope as massive wildfires impact Spain in and France. Spain's
military rescue rescued some livestock in a village. Massive wildfires have
scorched more than 320,000 acres in Spain this year. More than 2600
firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel are responding west
of Madrid. Just this week, the fires have displaced more than a quarter of a
million people across southern Europe. Turning to weather now a live look from
our Fox five sky cam at the wharf overlooking Reagan National. Jen has
your final check on the weekend forecast, Jen. Yes, Regina, you're
gonna ask your final one. So hopefully we've got some final for tonight. Yes,
tonight. I'll be back here tomorrow. Saturday night. Yes, but I mean, but
who's counting right? What we're looking at for tomorrow with Gina is
actually still nice weather outside, but it's gonna feel more like summer and
every day is going to feel more like summer, meaning increasing humidity and
chances for thunderstorms. But for tomorrow afternoon, high temperatures
will be in the mid to upper eighties. Today really got to 82 degrees, so it
was a really nice afternoon. Here's our camera right now out of the National
Harbor temperature right now, 69 degrees, feeling like the actual
temperature from Reagan, Dulles as well as BWI. But as we look at the
numbers elsewhere across the region, we're already in the sixties like
Leonardtown, Fredericksburg, Culpeper. Tomorrow morning, your overnight lows
will be in the upper sixties. And then after that, the next couple mornings
they're gonna be back into the seventies. So hopefully you have enjoyed
this really nice weather pattern that we've had. It's almost felt more like
spring. As we look at satellite radar, we have a weak disturbance still to
the north of us. Dry conditions for us. High pressure is in control. But what
we had was a boundary system, an aerial pressure. It is since pulled away off
into the Atlantic, and that is allowed for pretty much everybody's dry out,
including southern portions of portions of Virginia and down towards
Carolinas. And then across parts of the upper Midwest, we do have some storms
and severe weather setting up. But the one thing that we want to point out is
that big Ridge is still set up across parts of the West. While we have been on
the cool side, those temperatures have been sizzling, and I'll show you those
in just a moment. Here's our planner ahead for tomorrow. Cloudy skies for
right now. But as we go through tomorrow morning, mostly clear skies
and then chance for a few showers and a few thunderstorms around. Nothing is
going to be a washout tomorrow. Continue with your plans outdoors. We
will have high temperatures, I said 86 degrees, and the majority of the area
will be dry. So we look at our future cast. We start the clock right now. We
go into tomorrow morning, mostly sunny start to the day and then four o'clock,
maybe a stray shower. You can see a good chunk of the area not looking at
green. But as we go later into the evening hours, we'll see another little
wave of disturbance coming through, bringing with it the chance for a few
storms. And then on Monday, we're in the marginal risk category for severe
weather. But that's all the way to the far northwest, closer to I 81 closer to
the Allegheny's. And then on Monday afternoon, there's your storm chance.
But Monday into Tuesday, that is going to be the most active day. We
potentially could start off the morning with some wet weather. Then storms come
through in the afternoon and the same as we go through your evening. And then
on Wednesday we will dry things out and then we will see that sunshine coming
back. But for your Monday, here's that marginal risk category all the way to
the northwest again. Hager Sound, Winchester D. C. Not so much. But on
Tuesday, certainly I think the entire region potentially could be under a
slight risk category for tonight. These are your lows, the sixties around.
Enjoy them while you can. And then we go into tomorrow. These are your high
temperatures high tomorrow of actually 86 degrees in D. C. 84 in Fairfax, 85
in Dale City. The average for this time of the year is 90 degrees. Now, next
Saturday, the average high will be 89 because we are moving into August 1st.
Hard to believe. But yeah, August is almost here. 85 for high Martinsburg
and the same for Winchester. And here's the proof just to show you how
climatologically we will see those temperatures starting to drop off
august 89 and then the middle of august august 15th 88 degrees. Here's a look
at your seven day forecast tomorrow. 86 money chance for a few storms. 89
Tuesday, 89 Wednesday we dry things off and then we start to see those
temperatures creeping back up with a high of 90 degrees but not for next
Saturday. Regina. All right. And coming up next, a basketball pro from the D.
