A Ukrainian F-16 has shot down a Russian fighter jet for the first time. This was announced by General John Daniel Kaine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during a hearing of the US Senate Appropriations Committee.
Democratic Senator Richard Durbin asked the general what the potential three-year suspension of air defense funding would mean for Ukraine. In response, Kaine spoke about the development of Ukraine's defense capabilities.
"I would like to commend the work that Ukraine's industrial base is doing to expand its capabilities. This encompasses everything from their surface-to-air capabilities to their air-to-air capabilities," the senator noted. He emphasized that "we recently achieved our first victory in an air battle when a Ukrainian F-16 shot down a Russian fighter."
"So I think their ability to build up a layered defense has increased significantly over the last few years," the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff added.
Media previously reported that a MiG-29 fighter jet was shot down in a strike on an airfield in the Kursk region. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade "Cherny Les" successfully carried out an operation at the Khalino airfield. As a result, in addition to the MiG-29 fighter jet, a Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun system was destroyed.
We also recently reported that an SBU strike on the Engels-2 military airfield in Russia's Saratov region literally broke a Tu-95 strategic bomber in two. Satellite images show that the plane's tail was literally torn off.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Defense Forces had destroyed a Russian Tu-95 in Engels. Russia uses aircraft of this type for missile strikes against Ukraine. According to the president, the distance from the Ukrainian state border to the destroyed aircraft is approximately 800 kilometers. As the President noted, thanks to this precision, Ukraine is defending itself fairly and vigorously.
In turn, as reported by the Security Service of Ukraine on Telegram , according to preliminary data, this aircraft suffered critical damage – its tail section was completely torn off.
"The SBU is systematically destroying key elements of the Russian military machine. Every destroyed strategic bomber means dozens of missiles not launched at Ukrainian cities, Ukrainian lives saved, and tens of millions of dollars in irreparable losses for the enemy," the statement reads.
It is also noted that Russian strategic aviation can no longer feel safe even at its most remote military airfields. "The Ukrainian Defense Forces also carried out strikes against Russian oil industry facilities and certain targets in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. We are raising the price for Russia's aggression against our state and people," the president added.
As reported, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has repeatedly used Tu-95 aircraft to launch missile strikes on peaceful Ukrainian cities , including hits on apartment buildings. These aircraft are capable of launching cruise missiles. In 2025, Ukrainian intelligence agencies carried out Operation Spiderweb and disabled up to eight Tu-95MS strategic bombers. Russia continues large-scale construction of protective hangars at the Engels Air Base, where shelters for Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers have been under construction for at least a year.
