A strike against Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" and its associated logistics routes will have a significant impact on temporarily occupied Crimea, particularly on the economic situation, no earlier than the end of summer. This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian Navy Press Secretary Dmitry Pletenchuk during a telethon broadcast.
Specifically, he was asked to comment on when exactly the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Operation "MoLoChKa," which is ongoing in the Sea of Azov, will impact the peninsula, which the occupiers annexed in 2014 and turned into their military hub.
According to Pletenchuk, the processes occurring, in particular in the Sea of Azov, in connection with the destruction of the "shadow fleet" vessels, are rather inertial in nature. "I wouldn't expect any tangible results before the end of the summer. Because the infrastructure has been built over a long period of time, and it won't be possible to knock it out overnight, of course. But in any case, if we don't work on it, it will never happen," the military man suggested. He noted that enemy targets had been hit in the Sea of Azov before. Now, he added, the scale had changed. He added that there were no alternative routes to Crimea. "For example, I've divided the Kerch Strait into two vectors – vertical and horizontal. The horizontal is from the so-called Russian Federation to Crimea, which is temporarily occupied by Ukraine. This logistics has now been seriously affected. And the vertical is from the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. And here, the Russians are not doing well, because it's now a permanent destruction zone," Pletenchuk said.
He added that the currently available assets—drones—are more extensive, while significantly more expensive missile weapons are virtually impossible to use on such a scale. Another important factor is the systematic "disabling" of Russian air defenses in Crimea and the temporarily occupied territory of southern Ukraine, which has been ongoing for almost a year. In other words, the preconditions for a large-scale operation to destroy the "shadow fleet" had to be created, the press secretary explained. A relentless Ukrainian drone bombardment campaign launched with the objective of cutting the Kremlin-occupied region of Crimea off from mainland Russia and nullifying it as a military base is now two weeks old, and most indicators show Kyiv’s massed air operation with hundreds of kamikaze aircraft flying sorties daily are proceeding well and finding plenty of targets. Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, announced on July 6 his troops were kicking off systematic attacks against Russian cargo trucks, fuel tankers, rail hubs, power grid, bridges, and automobile ferries moving people and goods to and from the Black Sea peninsula.
The announced campaign objective is to sever all links between Russia and Crimea, a Ukrainian territory invaded and annexed by the Kremlin in 2014, as part of a larger national strategy of forcing Russia to peace negotiations using drone strikes against high value targets. Brovdi said the intent was “logistics lockdown.”
