The Killer Whale Breached First: A Steller Sea Lion Pup's Race to the Rock | Full Documentary

The rock is barely ten meters of black volcanic stone, and Otis is born on the edge of it — a dark, helpless Steller Sea Lion pup wedged between two ways to die. Above him, thousand-pound bulls fight blind, swinging a ton of muscle inches from his head. Below him, in the churning Aleutian surf, the shadows of transient killer whales never leave the rock.
His mother, Tide, is starving. She has not eaten since he was born, and her milk is running thin. To make more, she has to slide off the rock and into the killers' water — again and again — where a single wrong second means Otis is left alone on the stone forever. This is the impossible arithmetic of raising a pup on a storm-swept rookery: every drop of milk is paid for with her own body, in water that hunts.

Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias jubatus) are the largest of all sea lions — bulls reach 1,000 kg — and they breed on exposed, wave-battered rocks across the Aleutian chain. Pups are born with a near-black natal coat and cannot swim for weeks, leaving them exposed to storms, crushing adults, and the transient orcas (Orcinus orca) that patrol the shoreline for exactly this moment.

Some scenes were visualized with AI because the most fragile Steller Sea Lion moments are almost impossible to film safely: a newborn pinned among fighting bulls, a mother vanishing into killer-whale-patrolled water, an orca erupting from the surf, and a pup's first descent past a sleeper shark in the black deep. AI was used as a careful documentary reconstruction tool — to show real biological behavior without disturbing real wild animals or their habitat.
