This NEEDS To Happen ...
Jul 21, 2026
Let's talk about more moves, but this time I want to talk internal decisions that the Padres could maybe make to just
Bring up some help instead of training everybody. What if we just hold hold on to what we got and act from inside?
Sounds like a novel concept sounds like one that maybe a J Prowler
Might not be aware is an option break it all down with y'all on this episode of Padres digest
What's going on? Everybody Christian Pedersen back with another episode of the show. It truly is
unsure if
This means the Padres are in it or not
I'm assuming not or I'm actually assuming worst-case scenario is that the Padres are going to remain like
Just vaguely in it enough all season
To boil this thing down to like how we miss the wild card by a game
This year wasn't really that big of a failure. This year wasn't actually that bad. It was just
we came up a little short at the end and
That's really frustrating because we have a really good core of a team, but we have a really bad pitching staff
and it's true that moves are needed, but
We've done enough videos now. What about the Mason Miller trade? What about Zander? What about Michael King? What about what about that?
I think that sometimes those get a tad bit clickbaity and repetitive. And so like I said, I want to talk about
developing
internal talent that is
Supposedly what this list of talent is is supposed to be the guys who when I mean
Maybe I'm completely comment if you think I'm completely wrong
But my understanding of what the farm system is
Is supposed to be when your team isn't good enough at the major league level you look internally you go
Here are the guys that we have available for us to come up and help not just here is our trade asset
Ethan Salas and cash Mayfield both of them making the futures game. That's fantastic
I want to talk about Miguel Mendez and Ethan Salas being potential help for this team right here right now or
maybe not even help for the team right here right now, but
Can be like just a spark an
Enthusiastic a little bit of just a just a just a just a way to help
This year while also long term
Helping the Padres by showing us what we have date
Even if it's just a little glimpse guess my base question is
What can it hurt to bring up two of our top five prospects in a season?
Where we obviously need help at catching and pitching in our top five prospects
we have a catcher and a pitcher that we can bring up both of whom I
Not even saying we have to throw them into the deep end. We can just be like hey Ethan Salas
Come up for two weeks
Let's put for mean or somebody on the IL or whatnot and get a guy who is currently the number
32
Overall prospect in in baseball, so not just in the top 100 but number 32 overall in baseball
Left-handed hitting catcher. He is somebody who has had a bit of an offensive uptick this season
He's only 20. He's got a bunch of defensive metrics that
Allegedly, he's gonna be a Molina brother and win all these gold gloves and now
Okay, it's at the double-a level, but he's hitting 282 he's got a little teeny bit of Pat like he let's call it
He's at least serviceable on the offensive end in a way that represents like this is growth for him as a player
So I will ask him
What's the harm in putting that kid at the backup catcher position?
the only two things that I can rationally come up with are oh, we're gonna destroy his confidence and
You know hurt his what his his
Ability to grow into being the major leaguer who we need him to be all of the things
I will remind you say his estimated arrival time in major league baseball is
2027 that is
Next season so I just am like what?
What's the what's what is four months too early on that?
The only thing I can come up with is this the stupid
service time
versus arbitration and
Contract and that down the line he could be more expensive for us if we don't just wait
And if that's if that is the only thing stopping us bringing up even Salas that we have broke
We broke bees and we also have broke-ass mindset because what it what is the penny-pinching of like? Oh my gosh
We need to pay
12 million less dollars in five years for this catcher who's gonna be generational versus we have a
generational catcher ready to come up and help us at a position that is not good for us currently on a team that is
Just kind of hanging on this year and could you like?
Imagine the hype around like for what we saw around torso coming up last year
If we had Ethan Salas making his debut at a home game two weeks from now
Get a little bit of a little bit of that that oomph back you that would be a series
Where there would be some pretty good numbers, I think maybe I'm completely wrong
The other guy there Miguel Mendez that I want to talk about. Yes, Cash Mayfield
Made the futures game, but he is a little bit further away. Miguel Mendez is in double-a right now and
Has worked as both a starter and a reliever has been a starter most of this season
Okay numbers, I don't want to pretend like he is somebody who will
show up and singularly
redefine the the Padres organization the way that the the talent is
the talent
Greater assessors is the word. I was looking for the way the talent assessors are saying that Ethan Salas
Will but Mendez is a pitcher and we need help at pitching and we've already seen that they brought back
Roadman Randy and put him in the bullpen to just kind of
You know leave him there let him work on his stuff for the season and so what's the problem with bringing up Miguel Mendez?
to
sit in the bullpen hang out learn his craft the
Numbers here for Mendez that says 2026
this is the year that he is supposed to be up and develop into a major league talent according to these
MLB insiders, so I would say that why
Instead of
overextending ourselves and making some stupid trade here and some this that and the other unless there's something that really like
If we can clear house and get these three guys traded for these ten prospects or something like that and it's like, oh my gosh
We're now the deepest farm system in all of baseball
Why not?
Just let the team
Lay, you know play a little ball if the boys got it and we really do have
Enough of a jolt from our team to clear this hurdle and get ourselves into like a playoff race
What's again? What's the bad thing about Mendez and Salas being in the clubhouse for that?
like that feels to me like
Excellent vibes and a good place to learn and a good
Just a good healthy environment to be in and if the team goes the other way and slides way out of it
It's a no-stress
Situation for them to be up there
Learning on the job with a bunch of pros going into an offseason where they can say, okay
I got a little I got an actual taste of major league baseball. I didn't get brought up to a team. It was
Running away with the division
so I had to sit on the bench and really just like I just got to be window dressing like got out there played a
little bit pitched or caught or whatever it is and
Then we can go into an offseason and make
much more
Controlled calculated reserved moves and deal with actual free agency and our new owners can come in and if they want to buy
Scoob all and go nuts on that front and do to do to do that feels like a position of power on
Top of a good foundation of actually trying to build some of our internal talent and debut it
So I'm confused as to why these guys aren't more of in the conversation about why they aren't
Major leaguers. Yeah, that's just my two cents for today
