The Ukrainian Armed Forces have effectively created an operational zone behind Russian lines. Russian air defenses are powerless against Ukrainian drones. Ukrainian forces are present in the Black Sea, and Russian aircraft are in the air 24/7. The situation is reversed in the Sea of Azov: the Defense Forces are not physically present in the waters, but they are present in the airspace. This was stated today, July 19, by Dmytro Pletenchuk , spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy , on the freedom television channel, commenting on Ukrainian strikes against Russian vessels in the Black and Azov Seas . "And now, in fact, the Russians find themselves in the same situation they kept us in for four years. Therefore, we can say that a shift is being observed. And this is a shift at a strategic level," he noted.
Pletenchuk noted that the attacks on Russian logistics are causing more problems not for the Russian troop group in Crimea, but for Russian army units on the left bank in the Kherson region.
"It (the Russian troop group in the Kherson region, — ed.) is probably more pressing for us right now. It is, after all, an active combat zone. And they must also secure it. Securing this particular point is the most difficult, because both routes are fairly equidistant from the Kherson region, and at the same time, both are under attack," the spokesman explained.
Regarding Crimea, he recalled that the main task of the Defence Forces in relation to it is to turn the peninsula into a suitcase without a handle for Russia and “fill it with bricks.”
"That is, it was already uncomfortable to carry, and when it becomes very heavy, at some point your arms simply can't hold it anymore. For the Russians, Crimea is, first of all, their main naval base, whatever the situation there is now. For the Russians, Sevastopol is their main naval base in the Black Sea, a strategic one. And on top of that, for the Russians, this is an opportunity to harass us at sea by basing their aircraft, and an opportunity to continue the rhetoric that Crimea is a point from which they can, in principle, project their power beyond the Black Sea region," Pletenchuk said.
According to him, when talking about Crimea, we're talking not only about Ukraine, but also about the Mediterranean and other countries. Therefore, the peninsula is strategically important. But it also has its downsides.
"It's surrounded by water on practically three sides, which makes staying there very difficult. And, in fact, if you open history books, you'll find that this has always been the main problem. And the outcome of Crimea's defense has always been roughly the same. Therefore, there's a possibility that history will simply repeat itself this time," the guest opined.
