About the painting 🖼️
《清明上河圖》(Along the River During the Qingming Festival) is arguably China's most famous painting. Created by Zhang Zeduan during the Song dynasty (960–1279), this five-metre handscroll captures a single bustling day in Bianjing — then a megacity of over a million people — through the daily lives of more than 800 ordinary people: merchants, fortune tellers, storytellers, delivery boys, and even a boat headed for disaster. It's less a painting and more a novel you read scene by scene, and painters from every later dynasty raced to imitate it.
