This video is a demonstration of painting on Chinese painting book which is made of raw rice paper. It's a mounted book designed for easy viewing of small paintings by flipping through the pages.
There are two demonstration of Chinese painting. The first one is a bird on a rock with orchid at the bottom. The second painting is a double page spread painting of bird and gourds.
Happy watching!

Hi everyone, I'm Kate. Welcome back to my channel. Today I've bought this new booklet to paint
and this is a booklet for painting. So let's get started. The foot size of this booklet is 35
centimeters by 25 centimeters which is a bit narrower for my usual 35 by 35 square painting.
Each of the pages is double-sided and you turn the page like this. There is a slit in between
the front and the back pages so I'm gonna put a piece of paper in between just in case the
ink seeps through the paper and ruins the one on the other side. This paper is a blank piece of
newsprint paper. You may use any paper I think. I don't know if anyone reads newspaper but you
just use that. This is the first time I paint on this type of booklet. The paper type is raw paper
but it looks pretty thick to me so we'll see. I'm gonna start by using just ink and use a large
brush to paint a piece of rock and then a smaller brush to paint an orchid which is a good way to
test a paper. So far I think that this paper isn't really that raw. I can see that my ink gets dried
very quickly but I've been very cautious not to take too much water in case the paper is really
raw. The paint will bleed and I would lose the intended sharp edges. There is a little bit on the
thicker orchid stroke. By the way in case you wonder why I started off on the right hand side
it's because Chinese writing starts from right to left which is the opposite of the English
writing. So when we read or write Chinese vertically we always start from the right to left.
Okay now I am kind of excited to check on the paper and see how it goes. Okay there was some
ink in between. It did absorb some of the ink that sits through the paper and
yep the other side is clean. It's good. Now let's take a look at the shades that I can get from this
first painting. With more confidence I'm now painting a double page spread.
I'm using a large brush to take more ink to paint some broad leaves.
Now I'm using the large brush again to paint some vines. It's a risk because I've never
tried on this type of paper and I really hope that it works out well.
It looks so far so good and I really really like the dried brush strokes that I can get.
Now I continue to use the large brush to paint some gourds.
Take some yellow color add a bit of orange color at the top to paint.
Painting a large subject without too many brush strokes is a bit challenging. You have to make
sure that there is enough color in your brush. For expressionistic Chinese painting less is more.
Since the surface of the gourd is smooth I want to use one big stroke to paint the entire gourd.
Now I'm painting a bird to perch on the vine. The bird belly is a mixture of yellow, orange and
a tiny bit of China red and then the rest is just ink. I'm adding another gourd here. The reason
why I'm painting it now is that because I wanted to wait till the ink is completely dry so that the
added color would not blend with the ink or the ink would not bleed into the color that I'm going
to paint. Can you see on the lower gourd on the left that there is a bit of bleeding of ink onto
the gourd? This booklet is meant to be made of raw rice paper so I suppose even after it is mounted
and I don't find it all very raw it is still a bit of raw in a sense that the ink dries slowly
so it bleeds a little bit and I have to make sure that it is completely dry before I paint
another layer. Overall I think that this booklet is pretty good in terms of quality
and the color comes out well and I don't have to worry about getting it mounted because after I'm
done then I'm done and you can view your artwork by flipping through the pages. Okay let's take a look
all right this is the first one and you flip it open and this is the second one.
I hope you like this video. I'll see you next time!
