Antara Residence looks completely contemporary, but many of the ideas behind it have shaped homes in Kerala for generations.

Designed by Ark Architecture Studio in southern India, the house responds to heat, humidity, and heavy rain through architecture rather than appearance alone. A shaded porch protects the entrance, a courtyard brings daylight and greenery into the center, and perforated jali screens allow air to move through while preserving privacy.

Inside, a double-height living space connects both floors and helps warm air rise toward openings near the roof. Two pitched roofs define the home’s distinctive shape, combining clay tiles, concrete, wood, and perforated brickwork in a modern composition.

Antara Residence does not try to look like an old Kerala house. Instead, it brings back what those houses already knew how to do.
