Inside A Tudor House That's Been Lived In For 500 Years

What is it like to stay in a 500-year-old Tudor house?

In this week's historical house tour, I'm staying at Wisson Hill, a Tudor farmhouse in Barton, Warwickshire, with parts of the house dating back to around 1530 and the reign of Henry VIII.

Hidden amongst this beautiful historic home's modern comforts are original Tudor timbers, smoke-blackened beams, carpenter's marks, possible apotropaic or witch marks, historic graffiti and objects discovered during restoration, all providing clues to almost 500 years of life inside this remarkable English farmhouse.

We'll uncover the history of Wisson Hill and some of the ordinary families who lived and farmed here, as well as a fascinating connection to William Shakespeare and the wider network of Midlands families that would later become connected to the Gunpowder Plot.

I also explore the beautiful countryside and historic places surrounding Wisson Hill, on the edge of the Cotswolds, including Hidcote and Chipping Campden, before visiting The Fleece Inn at Bretforton — a medieval timber-framed farmhouse which later became one of England's most atmospheric historic pubs.
