SCALP is a French version of the British Storm Shadow missile, and if it is equipped with a high-explosive or penetrating warhead, it will help Ukraine strike a number of enemy targets, including the Crimean Bridge. This was stated by Valeriy Romanenko, an aviation expert and leading researcher at the State Aviation Museum, in a comment to Unian.
According to him, based on information from open sources, SCALP missiles were produced primarily with cluster warheads.
"Apparently, the warheads are interchangeable, but open sources indicate that the SCALP has a cluster warhead, while the Storm Shadow has a high-explosive or penetrating warhead," he added. Romanenko noted that a cluster munition can cover anti-aircraft missile systems or infantry positions. If it contains submunitions, small fragments, they disperse over a specific area. Then, the trench no longer serves as cover, but due to the limited space, it becomes a trap, allowing for the destruction of multiple enemies. The expert said that the overall range of the SCALP missile is approximately 450–500 km, but Ukraine received modifications with a range of up to 300 km.
"We received Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles under agreements restricting the export of missile technology. These agreements prohibit the transfer of missiles with a range exceeding 300 km," he added. According to him, the SCALP warhead weighs approximately 450 kg. It is an air-launched missile. The expert emphasized that Ukraine is already launching them from Su-24 and Su-24M bombers.
"But there's hope that the French Mirage 2000s have been refitted to launch these missiles. This is our backup option, as the Su-24s are older aircraft. There was a special variant of the Mirage 2000D, which was a dedicated carrier for these missiles. The French Rafale fighter is also suitable," Romanenko said. The expert explained that these missiles are faster, smaller, and more compact, making them difficult to detect and more difficult to repel.
Romanenko noted that Ukraine recently launched a Storm Shadow missile strike on Bryansk, Russia, and that they were very successful, even though Russian air defenses could shoot them down.
"We launched five missiles, and only three hit. And that's a good result. The Russians haven't seen anything like this before. Speaking of Russian cruise missiles, Ukraine shoots down 95% of them. During the last attack, 32 of the 33 cruise missiles launched by Russia were shot down. Fighters primarily target cruise missiles, and cities are also covered by anti-aircraft systems. Overall, we've learned to repel cruise missile attacks with flying colors," Romanenko said. He emphasized that the Russians face challenges with this due to their vast territory. Furthermore, Ukraine used cruise missiles against targets difficult to cover with fighter aircraft. These are areas near the border, so the Russians have minimal reaction time and limited opportunities to shoot down these missiles. Romanenko emphasized that to achieve a truly significant result, Ukraine needs more missiles to strike targets in Russia than France produces. If these missiles only carry cluster warheads, their use will be limited—primarily against anti-aircraft missiles and radar systems. He added that for cluster warheads to be effective, a significant concentration of targets is necessary; otherwise, it would be like shooting sparrows with a cannon.
The expert noted that if the cluster warhead in these missiles is replaced with a high-explosive warhead, Ukraine will be able to strike oil refineries and major Russian defense facilities. The range of these missiles is sufficient to hit targets in Crimea and the Krasnodar Krai. He specified that they could also strike the Crimean Bridge, command posts, and ammunition depots.
