Behind the case are six interconnected investigations involving sums allegedly reaching trillions of yuan. Ma’s wife, Rong Li, is rumored to be an “insurance queen” who specialized in gifting insurance contracts worth millions of Hong Kong dollars to the wives of Politburo members. There is also a tenuous thread leading to Peng Liyuan.
