Come in and attack every practice practice with then I would say kind of
Just kind of the coaching as well, you know right now
I want to say the coaches the coaches are allowing us to you know, just play play through mistakes play
Build stuff with each other. So it hasn't been really too much teaching
It's kind of saying where everybody at and just going from there. So I think that's been a difference
Yeah, what's so different about the lips specifically just a speed? I mean
You know, it's fast-paced we're talking
You know, we're we're doing a lot of them the finishers
We're doing a lot of conditioning like it isn't just look with the same conditioning as well. And so I think
What was the reaction after your first way I came early so I actually came two weeks early to prepare for it
So my first year I knew what to expect in the sense of like it was kind of it wasn't as bad as it would
Have been had I not known coming into it, but it was still challenging like I left
Got on the court and worked it out of myself
How is it like going in the portal is it very it's chaotic it is chaotic it's scary, too
You know, you got a short period of time to find a home like in high school
You know, I had you got months to choose a school that you want to go and play
It's me a career at but in the portal, you know
It's a week period because there's spots opening up and closing quick
Coaches calling you one day and then you don't hear from them from a minute the next
And so my thing was making a sound decision and I didn't have an agent to help me
So I was hearing from everybody myself. So it's constant phone calls all day every night. I think overall
When I came down to it, you know pick the schools
I want to visit and didn't let nobody force me into making a decision early and then just sat down with my family
I think you had a relationship with one of the Iowa systems, right?
Did that help Iowa it helped a lot, you know coach Wheeler was somebody I've been talking to since I was a junior in high school
So that um that bond made it easy to kind of you know
I knew what he was about he knew what I was about and I knew the coaching staff previously from Drake
So that that helped them too
And so it made it a little bit easier for me to connect with them and already feel more comfortable with them
It didn't
But what stood out when you were on your visit here what stood out to be honest, it was just the final meeting
For my career wise it wasn't nothing financially based it wasn't nothing campus base
It was just what could be the best fit for me on the basketball court
And when I talked with coach McCullum and he said set out what you know
He saw and how he could make my better player
How do you your your one season at Illinois State like what do you feel like you did well
What do you feel like you want to get better at like what was that just experience like?
And that spirit is unbelievable
On the court. I think I showcased that you know, I could be a fearless player
You know as a as an underclassman as a true freshman playing at that level and having a big impact it showed
That I was just you know coming in and playing playing a game of basketball
I showed that I showed that I could get down he'll be a playmaker be a guy that could defend the ball at a high
Level, you know, I can knock down shots
knock down the three-pointer at a high clip and
Yeah, everything in between and I think that's what allowed me to get to this level how much did I guess how aware were you
of Bennett and just
The track record that that Ben has with point guards like how much I guess was that kind of in the back of your mind
With your decision
Bennett actually had a quote. He was like man. I think it was one after one of their March Madness games
He was like if you're a guard and you got the opportunity to play for Ben McCullum, you should take it
And I remember when I was in the quarter
I remember that quote and it was just you know after hearing that final meeting
It was kind of like man, I see what he's saying
You know
This guy is somebody that could take you to that next level if you just you just trust him you trust the work you trust
The process and since I've been here, I've been all in with it and I feel like
What do you feel like the challenges for you making the jump from
Illinois State to the Big Ten. What do you see as the challenges in that transition?
There's gonna be a lot of challenges, you know, obviously playing against
More athletic bigger competition. So, you know getting my body prepared for what that's gonna be like
Seeing getting better and reads
We've been I know there was some I want to come in and get better at Boston reason just you know being able to see
The court more so I think that's gonna be probably the biggest job for me
But also, you know playing instinctually out of it
And then I think at this level is gonna be a lot harder defensively
So just being it being able to you know
Learn the right positions and learn everything that comes with the system within that and and just knocking down shots
Where do you get your quickness from like is that some of that natural is that stuff you've had to work on?
I would say natural
I'm in here working and I wouldn't say, you know, one thing maybe kind of how I am. I think it's just God
I
