On June 14, Elaine Chao’s 84-year-old husband, Mitch McConnell—the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history—suffered sudden cardiac arrest. Emergency responders treated him at home before taking him to the hospital.
Just three days after her husband collapsed, Chao appeared at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on June 17, where she shook hands, smiled, and exchanged pleasantries with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng while discussing “practical cooperation.” According to Xinhua’s report, Han referred to the Trump–Xi meeting in May and said the two countries should strengthen economic and trade cooperation and promote people-to-people exchanges. Chao responded that she was willing to continue contributing to practical cooperation between the United States and China.
