AI GeneratedMark Griffith of Flames Digest discusses a viral and highly controversial theory suggesting the Calgary Flames could trade for Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid. While acknowledging the Flames' current asset wealth, Griffith dismisses the idea as completely unrealistic and \"bananas,\" arguing that such a trade would never happen between these two rivals.
People are absolutely losing their minds over something that genuinely could never happen,
right? I mean, you saw the thumbnail. Conor McDavid being traded to the Calgary Flames
is actually being spoken about online, not as a joke, but there's no way either side does it,
right? We're going to get into all that more in this video, but first I want to welcome you
to Flames Digest. I'm Mark Griffith. If you're new around here and you love the Flames, make
sure to subscribe so you can stay up to date on all the latest news, updates, reports, and rumors
revolving around your Calgary Flames. We would love to welcome you to the Flames Digest family,
and no, this genuinely isn't clickbait. People are genuinely talking about this online,
but in my opinion, there is no effing way, and you know which word I'm trying to say there.
It kind of spawns from this. I actually saw it first on Instagram, not related to this article,
saying the same thing about how the Flames are able to acquire Conor McDavid and should make
a trade with the Oilers. Now, first of all, before we even get into this article, which reads,
Big question mark at the end there, and the answer's no, once again, but from Ryan O'Hara
here. This was written on the Hockey News, and the Hockey News throughout the summer, I mean,
it's an interesting place to say the least. I had to talk about it. How could I not? But again,
like I said, I saw this on Instagram first in a completely different post, unrelated to what was
posted on the Hockey News, and people were talking about it a lot. You know, most people are saying
absolutely no way it would ever happen. Oilers fans are saying no. Flames fans are saying,
well, I mean, it just would never happen. Why would the Oilers make that trade kind of thing?
Not that I'm saying I wouldn't accept McDavid here, but the price would be astronomical. There's
no shock we'd be able to pay up for that, and I don't know. I don't even know if I'd really
want it to happen all that much, but a lot of neutrals were saying, oh yeah, the Flames really
could go after them. Look at all their prospects, all their picks, yada, yada, yada. They have all
this cap space, and I'll let the article do some more talking, but either way, I thought it was
just bananas that this is genuinely being spoken about online right now. So with 30 draft picks
through 2030 and nearly $15 million in cap space, the Flames have quietly built the kind of asset
war chest that could make a franchise-altering Connor McDavid pursuit impossible. Are you
kidding me? The Calgary Flames are not supposed to be here. They're supposed to be rebuilding.
They're supposed to be collecting draft picks, clearing contracts, and waiting years before
they become a serious threat again. Instead, they've quietly put themselves in one of the most
fascinating positions in the NHL. According to the author here, everyone else is exactly,
everyone else thinks exactly what you just said there. They have a young foundation beginning
to emerge, nearly $15 million in projected cap space, and an astonishing collection of draft
capital that currently includes 30 selections through the 2030 draft. And that raises an
interesting question. What if the Flames don't want to wait? And this question, sure, it's
interesting apart from bringing Connor McDavid into the equation here. What if the Flames don't
want to wait? I think they're supposed to wait. I think that's exactly what Craig Conroy knows he
has to do because that's what the Flames have essentially never done in their entire franchise
history. That's why he finally was able to just completely sell everyone last season, has
continued so far this offseason, and is building for the future. It doesn't look like he's not
wanting to wait anymore. So what if instead of slowly building toward contention, Calgary
decides to accelerate the process with the kind of move that changes the direction of an entire
franchise? What if Connor McDavid became available? Yes, that sounds far-fetched,
maybe even impossible. And look, Connor McDavid may one day, you know, become available. He will
never be available to Calgary in a trade with the Oilers. Maybe one day down the line through,
I mean, free agency, I couldn't see him signing here, but a trade with another team,
perhaps. I still just don't think it would ever happen. But either way, I think impossible
is key here. And like the chapter of this video, once again, there's just no effing way,
but hockey is a sport where the impossible has a funny way of becoming reality, not in Calgary.
And if the Edmonton Oilers captain, arguably the most talented player of his generation,
ever hit the market, few teams would have the combination of assets, financial flexibility,
and motivation that Calgary currently possesses. Again, all that true, but it's,
I'm not too sure. The Flames have spent the last several seasons attempting to reshape
their organization without completely tearing everything down. They've accumulated young talent,
maintained flexibility, and avoided putting themselves into the kind of long-term cap
problems that have limited other contenders. That patience could eventually create an opportunity.
A superstar center is the one missing ingredient every championship contender searches for.
Calgary has quality pieces, including a promising defensive group and emerging young talent,
but adding an elite number one center would immediately change the ceiling
of the franchise. And everything said there, you're not going to disagree with. It's all,
you know, it's all quite true. And then you bring McDavid into the equation and you're thinking
you're out to lunch here. McDavid would not just make the Flames better, he would transform them.
Of course, acquiring a player of that magnitude would require an unprecedented package. And look,
McDavid would obviously make any team better. He is the best player in the world on his day.
It's, it's, it's, this goes for every team. Why? We're only talking about Calgary because
they have assets. It's not going to be used in this way. I just don't see that happening.
A hypothetical offer would likely have to include significant assets, and Calgary has the ammunition
to at least enter the conversation. A package built around defenseman Zach Whitecloud,
veteran forward Huberto with salary retention, and a massive collection of draft picks would
represent the type of aggressive swing required to acquire a player like McDavid. And I just,
it blows my mind. Not only did this turn from Connor McDavid can be traded to the Edmonton
Oilers. In return, Jonathan Huberto would go to Edmonton. I mean, sign me the heck up if that is a
possibility here. I think whoever wrote this article is probably, you know, off some substances.
Let's be real there. They're still having stampede parties apparently, even though that ended a
couple of days ago now. But if there is a world where Huberto goes to Edmonton and McDavid is in
the return to Calgary, I don't even know what would happen. The city of Edmonton would riot.
The city of Calgary would riot for the exact opposite reason. It's just the most make believe
hypothetical trade. I think I've ever heard in my entire life. When it comes to sports,
it's just, I'm almost uncertain if this is a joke. When I, when I was reading this,
I thought, Oh, is it April 1st? Is it April Fool's day? What's going on here? But no,
people are genuinely talking about this online. That's why I'm saying, you know,
it's so hard to believe or what, what did I make the, I think I put two titles for this one.
There's no way they do this, right. Or people are losing their minds over this. And I'm one
of the people who thinks there's no way they do it. And I'm losing my mind. But would Edmonton
accept something like that? No, they wouldn't. Let's be honest. That's impossible to know.
I don't think it is. They'd say no. Would Calgary even consider sacrificing that much of its future?
That wasn't any of our future Huberto and white cloud and some pics. I'd be down. That's an even
bigger question. Disagree. But the fact that the conversation can even be entertained says something
about where the flames currently stand. White cloud in particular represents the type of valuable
Acquired from Vegas as part of the Anderson trade, the right shot defenseman quickly proved
he was more than a temporary cap piece. He has become a reliable top four option capable of
handling difficult defensive assignments while providing leadership both on and off the ice at
just 2.75 mil annually through 2027, 28 white cloud is exactly the kind of contract teams around
the league would love to add. And look, all agree that maybe Edmonton would want to go after white
Calgary does not have to move them though. That is the important distinction. The flames have
leveraged because they're not desperate. White cloud fits their roster, helps stabilize a young
defensive group and provides veteran leadership around developing players. But if the return is
a franchise altering superstar, everything has to be considered. That is the luxury Calgary has
created again. Why does the article make it sound like white cloud is more valuable than Connor
David? It's so funny the way this is written. It has so many questions in it. And honestly, when
you read it and are reading it the way I'm reading it, you see these questions and you can answer no
to all of them. And it's just, again, this is one of the most ridiculous articles I think I've ever
read in my life. If you are an Oilers fan watching this video because you saw the title or you saw
the thumbnail, don't worry. Trust me. I'm on your side. This genuinely makes no sense. Calgary would
almost impossible to imagine. It is exactly. The flames would also have to convince McDavid that
Calgary is the right destination for the next chapter of his career. But hockey is unpredictable.
The idea of Wayne Gretzky leaving Edmonton once seemed impossible. The idea of superstar players
changing teams has become increasingly common in today's NHL. Could the flames actually land
McDavid? No, no, they couldn't. But of course he says probably not. But could Calgary be one of the
few teams positioned to at least make the phone call? No, but he says absolutely. And sometimes
in the NHL, being prepared for the impossibles, how franchises end up making history. If Connor
McDavid gets traded to the Calgary flames, I will literally do whatever the most liked comment on
this video says. And if he gets traded at any point to the Calgary flames in his career, then
I'll absolutely follow up on that. But what the heck was this? Well, honestly,
what was this? And again, if I had more space to show more photos, I could have shown maybe
some comments from the Instagram posts or something like that. But people are genuinely debating if
the Calgary flames can make a move for McDavid. Edmonton Oilers would never allow that to happen.
And I'm sure McDavid would want to go elsewhere. You know, he'd probably want to win a cup sooner
rather than later. Sure. He's got a lot of years left in the tank. And once Calgary is a good team,
because they're building a really good team for the future, he can be part of that. But
it's just, again, this makes no sense. There's no way. I just do not see it happening. I can't
believe this is a real article and people were genuinely debating it online. But again, let me
know if I'm the crazy one down below in the comments. And speaking of comments, let's get
into the comment of the day to wrap up this video, as we'd love to do here on the channel.
It comes from yesterday's video, of course. And this one, oh, that's the wrong button. There it
is. D. Chappelle here says they'll probably get a similar trade value for him talking about
White Cloud during the final year of his contract. I don't see them trading him unless they get an
offer they can't say no to. Yesterday's video, of course, about those White Cloud rumors,
finally addressing some of those. And like we just saw in this article, his contract,
or sorry, yeah, his contract doesn't expire until two seasons from now, the end of two seasons from
now. So July of 2028. So there's no absolute need to trade them right away. And there could
be value. Obviously you want to free up some spots for the younger guys, but White Cloud has so much
value. And as we just saw in the article, he's more valuable than Connor McDavid. So you might
as well keep him around, but either way, I love White Cloud. I'm still just flabbergasted at
whatever the heck this video just was. Thank you so much for watching this video. Please subscribe
what you saw here today and have a wonderful rest of your day.
