Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe San Diego Padres have placed pitcher Lucas Giolito on the 15-day IL due to elbow inflammation and recalled left-hander JP Sears from AAA El Paso. The move is viewed as a necessity to fill an innings gap rather than a performance-based promotion, as Sears has struggled significantly in the minors.
This is somehow worse than it looks. Major Padre's injury update as this one player
has been confirmed put on the IL while this player has been brought up.
Who are they? Is this a good thing? Is it a bad thing? Should we all panic? Let's talk about it.
Hi, welcome back to another episode of Padre's Digest with your host, Andrew.
We have some injury updates to talk about some breaking Padre's news. Wee-oo, wee-oo.
I'm going to tell you exactly how to feel about this and let's just say

Juan de Peralta's starting tonight. That's no surprise. There's your other news for today.
Whoa! But the actual news, we have recalled left-handed pitcher JP Sears from AAA El Paso,
and have placed right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito on the 15-day IL retro to June 22nd
with right elbow inflammation. Does this sound like a Phantom IL move to you? Yes. Yes, it should.
Do I care that he's on the Phantom IL? No. Please get off of my team.
So what does that mean for us? Well, let's start with Lucas Giolito, and then I'll show you guys
JP Sears. I know we're familiar with JP Sears from last year, but how has he looked this year
in AAA? But first, Lucas Giolito, his stats this year, why I'm not missing him, 516 ERA,
whip almost two, no strikeouts, more walk percentage or higher walk percentage than
strikeout percentage, not great, right? But retro to June 22nd, so he'll have 14 more days
until the IL, and then he'll probably have a rehab stint where he'll work out more in
AAA. Basically what we did with Matt Waldron and Lucas, or Jaramal Marquez. But this is actually
his second straight year an elbow issue has cut into his season. He missed all of 2024 after
internal brace surgery, then had one end in his 2025 postseason in Boston. So while it could be
Phantom IL, it could also actually be a real problem, and that's why he sucks. But I'm still
leaning towards Phantom IL, but that's fine. Now, now the news you're caring about, how good is JP
Sears? Well, he sucks. If you thought Jaramal Marquez, Matt Waldron, Griffin Canning, and
Lucas Giolito were bad pitchers, JP Sears is worse than all of them. As the great Samuel Jackson once
said, hold on to your butts. How bad is he, Andrew? He can't be that bad. You're saying he's worse
than Lucas Giolito and Griffin Canning? Yes. So recall from AAA, his AAA ERA, 7.92. But Andrew,
it's AAA. It's a hitter's paradise. Well, let's dive into it, right? You can see his stats. They've
always been bad. Last year was a 5.04, not great. Flash line against him was 3.23 average, 3.90 slug,
5.13 OPS, OPS, or on base, and then OPS 9.03. 9.03, right? 20% strikeout rate. That's cool,
but a 9% walk rate. Hitters are doing just as much damage at AAA as they were in the majors.
So of course we saw the ERA, the OPS, overall stuff, plus below average at 90, 100 being
average. So he's below average in basically everything. And the walk rate, not great,
9.3%. 5.25 was already his worst MLB season, 5.04 ERA, a career-low 117 strikeouts and 135.2
innings. The demotion to AAA has not fixed anything. 7.92 ERA and a 9.03 OPS against in
63 innings at El Paso. Velocity is fine. I mean, 93 MPH, we'll call it 94 to be nice,
but the shape isn't missing bats. Sinker and cutter both whiffing under 12%. So people are
not missing those pitches. His slider is the one real weapon, 95 stuff plus, which is still below
average, and just 3.42 expected weighted on base average allowed, but he only throws it 18% of the
time. So he barely even throws his best pitch, but he has a lot of pitches. So maybe that's cool.
The worst part is we have a walk problem in the major leagues. And JP Sears, his walk rate has
gone up since last year. It ticked up, not down. In the minors, it's 9.3%. Command issues have
traveled with him to El Paso. This recall is about need, not performance. He's filling an
innings hole. Nothing in the data says he's turned a corner. And you can look into his stats. His
foreseeing that he throws half the time sucks. And the rest of his pitches kind of suck too.
I mean, the sweeper is 98. That's cool. Still below average. Whiff rate, below 25. Expected
weighted on base average, 320. So the easiest way I can explain it to you is that people are
hitting 320 off of him, which is good, right? That would make you an all-star in the MLB.
So yeah, you can look at the percentiles if you want in AAA. They're basically all below average,
right? His big thing back in the day was that he was great at not walking people,
and his command was good. That's probably one of the reasons why we traded for him
with Mason Miller. But that's regressed. Regressed a lot. So let's just say there's
not much to look forward to when it comes to JP Sears. I fully think this move only happens because
German Marquez is still working his way back, and Matt Waldron is still a lot of time left
needed for his rehab. German Marquez is the closest, though, but I guess they still want
him to pitch a little bit more. And then this might honestly mean, because I don't know if
JP Sears has any more options. I probably should have checked that. But if he doesn't, this might
mean it might be the end of JP Sears, and we'll DFA him. And then if he gets picked up by another
team, which he won't, we can put him on a minor league deal, and then we're free from the shackles
of his contract. But yeah, since obviously Giglio's not going to pitch anytime soon,
we're probably going to see JP Sears starting, and that terrifies me. The only way I could see
this possibly working is if they do a Kyle Hart-JP Sears piggyback, but I don't know.
I don't know if Craig Stammen has that in mind. I don't know what their plan is.
All I know is that I'm terrified, and you should be terrified, too.
Padres baseball, you never cease to stress me out. But what do you guys think about this? Are
you happy that Gialito is gone, or are you sad that Gialito's gone, but the price is now you
have someone worse called up to the major leagues? Do you think Gialito needs time on the aisle to
fix this stuff, or do you think he's washed? Are you willing to give JP Sears a chance,
or do you think he's also washed? Let me know. Thank you guys so much for watching. Please
subscribe as always. Follow us on xFacebook, Instagram, Padres Digest, and go Padres!
You stress me out. Please win more games. Okay, bye.
