During a counter-drone mission in Russia, its own mobile air defense group shot down a Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter, Forbes reports.
The helicopter was hunting Ukrainian drones when a ground-based mobile air defense group engaged in the same mission opened fire. According to available reports, this is not the first such incident, but one of the most costly in terms of its consequences.
The Ukrainian strikes are based on AN-196 "Lyuty" and Fire Point FP-1 drones—quiet aircraft flying at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. According to the report, they evade Russia's powerful missile defenses by flying at low altitude, which simultaneously makes them easy targets for other weapons, particularly helicopters. That's why Russia, following Ukraine's example, has deployed mobile volunteer teams to likely drone attack sites. In this case, according to the source, a BARS unit was armed with the 9K333 Verba MANPADS, a modern system with a triple guidance head that tracks targets in the ultraviolet, near-infrared, and mid-infrared bands. The range is over three miles, and the warhead weighs approximately three kilograms.
According to the publication, mobile air defense team members receive extremely low pay—around $133 per week, plus a $200 bonus for each drone shot down. However, the team members often complain that they don't receive their bonuses. The author believes this is precisely what encourages them to fire without carefully checking their targets.
Both helicopter crew members ejected. One of them was reportedly killed instantly due to a malfunction in the ejection system, while the other was evacuated alive. Unlike the Ka-52, Western helicopters are not equipped with ejectors due to the difficulty of exiting from the rotors and the belief that a controlled landing is safer. Russia's losses in the incident included one crew member, a $170,000 missile, and a $16 million helicopter—and yet the drone they tried to shoot down still made it.
It is noted that since the start of the full-scale war, Russian air defenses have already shot down at least seven of their own helicopters, in several cases while pursuing drones. Russia had approximately 90 Ka-52s at the start of the war, but currently, approximately half of them remain combat-ready.
Earlier, near the Millerovo military airfield in the Rostov region, Russian air defense forces likely shot down their own military helicopter while repelling a massive attack by Ukrainian drones. This was reported by Russian military bloggers and aviation-related Telegram channels. According to available information, the entire helicopter crew was killed. There was no official confirmation of this information at the time; the governor of the Rostov region only acknowledged the drone attack.
The occupiers also shot down their own Su-30SM fighter jet over temporarily occupied Crimea , according to Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk. He stated that they repelled the Ukrainian drone attack so aggressively that they ultimately shot down their own aircraft.
