Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces say they struck 14 vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” in the Sea of Azov during overnight drone operations on July 9, as part of a broader campaign targeting Russian military and logistical infrastructure. According to the Ukrainian statement, the overnight operation hit a total of 45 military targets in occupied Crimea and southern Russian-controlled territories. Among the reported targets were the Saky Thermal Power Plant, three fuel storage facilities, two fuel and lubricant depots, a Zhitel electronic warfare system, communications towers, fuel tankers, and other military logistics assets. The Ukrainian military said the maritime strikes targeted 12 oil tankers, one cargo ship, and one tugboat operating in the Sea of Azov. Officials claimed all identified tankers are part of Russia’s sanctioned “shadow fleet,” which Moscow allegedly uses to transport oil in circumvention of international sanctions. Ukraine also provided a chronology of recent operations, claiming that 35 tankers, cargo ships, ferries, tugboats, and other vessels have been struck over the past 96 hours. The list includes ships reportedly targeted on July 6, 7, 8, and 9, several of which were allegedly hit more than once. The operation was coordinated by the Deep Strike Center of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, according to the statement.
