Good evening and thanks for joining us for 22 News at 6, I'm Ciara Spillett.
And I'm Christina DeMores. 22 News is your local election headquarters.
And just a few hours ago, two candidates faced off in their first debate today.
22 News reporter Areta Odaya joins us live now in studio
and details what each candidate is looking to achieve.
Christina and Ciara, our 22 News broadcast studio transformed to host a much-anticipated
debate this afternoon, educating voters on their political viewpoints.
Incumbent Senator Ed Markey versus challenger Congressman Seth Moulton.
The two Democratic candidates vying for a seat in the U.S. Massachusetts Senate.
In the debate, a panel of four local journalists asked a series of questions,
with 22 News' Patrick Berry moderating the one-hour discussion.
Topics included age versus experience, noting Markey's 50-year tenure as a politician
and Moulton's new-generation approach. Restoring Medicaid and Medicare,
endorsements, taxing the rich, how to flip the House and Senate.
And President Trump's policies was also among the conversation,
which both candidates say they want to tackle head-on.
I respect the Senator, but he's constantly in the mud. And what people want is a vision
for the future, focused on new plans because the old plans are not working for the people
of Massachusetts. I think I was able to lay out the clear
choice that is being presented to Massachusetts voters. Well, I'm just out there on the trail,
crisscrossing the state every single day, and I'm going to continue to do so until primary night.
STATE PRIMARY ELECTION IS SET FOR SEPTEMBER 1ST.
MOULTON IS CURRENTLY NARROWING THE GAP IN HIS PRIMARY CONTEST,
WITH MARKEY CLOSING WITH SIX POINTS.
AND IF YOU MISSED ANY OF IT, DON'T WORRY, IT'LL RE-AIR ON 22 NEWS
FROM 7-8 TONIGHT. AND THERE'LL BE MORE ON 22 NEWS AT 10 AND 11.
WORKING FOR YOU, ORETTA ODAI, AT 22 NEWS.
