Okay, so today we're going to do rotor texture. Usually you roll your texture on the table to
make it flat like flat piece and then you build around your cylinder and then you pull it out.
So we're going to adapt the same concept on the wheel throwing pieces. The first thing we're
going to do is throw a cylinder and then we're going to drop our supporting tube inside and then
color so that your clay wall is fitting tight on the cylinder and then when you roll you have
something to roll against it on so your texture will be deeper. So that's the main idea and then
after you're done with the rolling you pull out the supporting tube to be able to pull it out
because when you have a clay and the wet clay stick onto the tube it's going to be sticking
so we do the concept as the way we do hand build. We're going to wrap newspaper around the tube.
Okay, so I will show you the whole process. Okay, so this is about 3.5 pounds of clay
and since we are going to stretch it out further so we will leave our wall slightly thicker.
So it's more or less in the center then check your speed of the wheel and then wet the surface
with water and you rub and then you create a slip on your hand. Right, and then to
comb it up I use more of my pinching fingertips, right fingertips so you see the
finger mark when I'm going up. Okay, and then compress it back down get this hand up here and
then connect both hands together and push it down in the meantime my right finger is still pinching
right when I'm pinching push down this hand is compressing it so see that this part here is
centered but and continue coming down so this fingertip moves down here and then this hand
moves down here so when I'm squeezing this part here my right fingertip is pinching so this part
here is centered right and then come back here again squeeze it and this fingertip pinching
so the centering process into a couple of sections right here center here center and here center
so that's the um for you to be able to see it but usually I don't do that I just do it here right
here and and and and that's it okay that is the centering technique and then make a top flat
drill some some together a bit water here open the small cup there
add a bit more water slip coat it everywhere drill right this fingertip go straight down and
then connecting together and this hand pinch here everything is connecting see that everything is
connecting and going down straight down keep on going a little bit dry touch up with water
and continue okay now about half an inch thick I will stop and then I pull it out
make the base wider slippery just enough water and then spray my finger level
with this hand supporting and this kind of pinching here everything come next right
pull out pull out pull out pull out now I make my base a bit flat and then you can go back there to
compress it a couple times use your pad finger pad and then you go
from center to the corner and from corner to the center you can do that a couple times
and you can see that when I'm open up there's a little my fingertip is slightly exaggerated
so that the corner has a little bit indentation right there right so later I'm going to the
inside the finger inside will pull from the corner and move it up pinch and the corner
and squeeze pinch and then move it up and continue pull all the way to the rim
compress the rim that's initial lifting actually not quite lifting yet just squeezing
and then get your cylinder collar make it straight and if you don't use most of your
clay you see that there's a skirt of clay hanging over here right pinch it in this part here
this right fingertip this hand stabilize it pinch it in so now my base is a bit narrower
yep just the fingertip yes this hand stabilize it and this hand right here right pinch it in
so tuck in all the skirt you can use the most of the clay right this piece of clay slightly
thicker so I could do one more squeezing I can reduce the speed of the wheel a bit
slippery make make sure every time when you touch the surface
it is slippery okay so brush a bit slip brush a bit of water
and you see that my water that's my water so after I finish still have lots of water there
because I use very little water right pinch there like this see that my inside hand is going and
just push the wall against see that against here this is where the most of the clay I push
that against it and raise it up right here see that push that against it and this hand
supporting it right supporting it so that's when you have a thicker amount of clay you do that
and now after I do compressing the wall is become a little bit curved can go back there
and then squeeze it make it 90 degrees right squeeze and now almost ready let me
color it first color you can make your wall slightly taller you see that when I'm doing so
where's my elbow it's always finding support right slippery slippery not enough put a little
water there so now everywhere I touch is slippery see that rubbing my finger there feel it that's
slippery and the outside rub fingers not slip enough brush a little bit water that's all you
right okay now lifting so this inside hand push out against on the very corner right so you see
that there's a little belly here right push out the belly and then now this the thumb is fit in
like this and lift it okay the belly and go this thumb squeeze in the belly
and lifting and relax when you come to the top harder compressed send it down here
continue lifting pinch so you can raise it up just using fingertip to lift it
slippery again remove all the slip of my fingertips brushing it over
right there's a little bit clear there if not use it all pinch it in right and then
belly out see the belly put my thumb holding the belly and move it up and I told you that I'm not
going to make it too thin because I'm going to stretch it later keep the wall slightly thicker
and you can continue with this method compress the rim compress and if this is too thick just
send down this portion here okay so that is the cylinder lifting and now I'm going to drop
this cylinder inside right drop it inside that is a little bit too narrow so I have to
stretch it out a bit otherwise I couldn't put it in there so stretch it out
stretch it out that's good and now we are going to put that inside and then
color so the clay is fitting tight on the supporting tube but you need to be able to
pull it out after you color that wall is fitting very tight so what you want to do is grab
newspaper and you're going to wrap the newspaper on the surface okay on the outside
that's good and then you're going to use slip as your glue to glue it on and then this part here
is tuck it in put it underneath tuck it in and you want to leave a little bit of a clearance here
because later your hand is going to dip here you are not going to hold the newspaper because
when you hold paper you won't be able to pull it out you have to pull out from here so
leave about half an inch to one inch without wrapping the newspaper okay and also we found
out if your wall is too tall sometimes it's very hard to pull out because it's fitting very tight
so my solution is wrapped two layers of newspaper if yours is shorter no problem but
when your wall is very tall it's very hard sometimes very hard you find out very hard to
pull it up so use two layers of the newspaper to do that okay i'm gonna wrap some other piece
all right and a bit glue all right so tuck it in here and then you're gonna drop your cylinder
inside drop it inside and before i do that i usually get a bit of water
um here so that soften this part here a bit because you can see that a lot of wrinkle there
i'm gonna make a little bit mess in the corner push out a bit further all right
pushing it in all the way down
yeah it should be wider so you want to drop it all the way down there and if you have a
slip in there that's fine because when you pull out that the paper this outer part of paper could
stick to the wall but we have two layers of newspaper so it should be easy to pull it out
and then now just color color your wall so that it's fitting
tight the main idea of putting this tube is to support so if you have something like this
there's no reason to put a tube there so you have to color to make it tight and to be able to
fit it very tight usually you want to start to push from the bottom slowly because there's a
gap in between so you know release the air if you start to color here you're going to trap the air
so it's very hard to release it so push up from the bottom until when you color until you can
feel that inside is solid and then you move up otherwise stay there until that was feeling good
and tight okay so this is good here fitting tight and then i can start to move up my
fingers my move up my hand and you want to do this slowly and make sure it's slippery
hold your hand slowly raise it up just like your color color your wall right you don't need to
push very hard here just later push to my clamp too hard it's harder to pull it out so
just relax here this part here and then after that clean up your finger marks
you clean up your finger mark your throat mark make sure the surface is nice and clean so when
roll the texture it will be easy to see and you can see the contrast that's good and then
scrape up and now you can roll up this is not very clean you can use a metal rip to clean up
all the mark that's good and then you can roll horizontally and you roll this way by the way
this is the rotor from that the texture from mkm you can google it can um so they have many
different textures just google mkm and they also have this kind of uh they call hand rotor hr hand
rotor different sizes okay hand rotor but this hand rotor they don't they they designed it for
hand roll so they don't have a handle for that and i designed the handle so you can hook it up
on the hand roller so that's easy to set up it's like this so you just hold it on here
and you open up and then you lock it in so you can roll against on the surface easily okay so
that's the hand rotor that i create a handle so that you can use that to roll it on the surface
and so there are a couple ways to roll it if you don't roll this against it okay so you have to
find the starting point and the ending point so you have to do this slowly and then after you
match it you release it okay so it's super hard that way so i would probably do the vertical way
soak it in the water and every time when you roll it up soak it in water again let me use a bigger
the whole piece in here and here start and hold it right there so that when you push you don't
tilt it roll up here and stop so i will stop maybe around about one inch below one inch below
because later i'm going to use that part to make that the top look nicer so and also when you if
you wrote it all the way here sometimes your pressure pressure is not even so the rim is harder
to get it back so i would just leave about one inch without rolling all the way up and then
continue to do that and also the technique for rolling love is that i usually hold my handle
45 degrees and when i wrote it i pulled it if you do that sometimes you drag it and
that the water is not rolling it's sliding so you want to like a slightly pull so you can roll
more clean if you find out when you're doing this method you find out you're clearly sliding
your angle is not right and your first might be too slippery okay right so from there and continue
go up all right so now i roll almost two-thirds of the whole circle so i have to calculate how
many more i needed maybe five more so i will need to separate more evenly one two three four
see that that's the last one five so i get it all the way around okay here hold on this part here
right and pull that's why i told you that deep about one inch clearance and then you pull out
and you can release the either part of a paper pull out and come here to get that
and you don't want to let the paper stay there for too long otherwise they might
stick onto the surface and later it's hard to get them out easily pull out carefully
okay you got everything except for a small paper that is dropped on the inside
so now the inside is clean and then you can start to expand your shape and this method
is very good good way to practice how you judge your shape because you could never touch the
outside so it's just use your hand inside to expand it and make sure that it's slippery and
the dry surface clean up and the paper is absorbing lots lots of a sleeve so it's fairly dry
so i'm going to just brush use a sponge brush some water on the inner part of the wall okay
that's good and then i'm going to start to shape it out to use the sponge on your hand and then
this is my fingers inside right my hand inside push out here here here
so you want to expand it slowly okay you don't want to push too fast too soon okay one more time
oh okay let me stop and you can see so that shape is growing okay now i'm gonna use my fingers
push out the corner push out here stretch out more here there you see that
now this is my head right here i'm looking further out to see which spot that i want to
have more curve so i just respond responding accordingly this part here i want to have more
right so stretch it out further okay come back here do again further out further out here
follow the curve you roll it out and see which what is the shape you like and then
you know go wider push out further so let me do one last push and then we will start to finish
the top that's good here okay so that's good and then now before i do something on the top make
sure that the inside is nice and clean i'm going to use my sponge to go there
the inside it's um so when i throw i tossed a bit of uh slip in there and also when i was
stretching i first i brush i use a sponge brush some water there so inside is slippery
and when i stretch i don't use a lot of surface touching the yes the stretching is basically just
the tip here on the pad of my fingertips the pad right so it's it's not creating a whole lot of
friction so i don't add a lot of water because when you add in water or when i grab a sponge
on there and keep on using the sponge sponge it's the water and keep on dissolving on the wall then
the wall is becoming weak that's why at the beginning i use sponge to do a couple shaping
but then i later i just drop my sponge and then use just my fingertips right so it's not absorbing
too much water weaken the wall all right so clean it up so that's good and then do a final adjustment
here maybe
okay and i told you that i did enough clay so i can do something with it here if i want to
make it smaller i can keep on keep on going make the opening smaller so you see that when i'm doing
so all my fingers is connecting and using just the finger on the shoulder inside the shoulder
right to support it and then outside him to the squeezing so inside i have a support and then i
just use my index finger to squeeze in the neck here see the neck here squeezing and this part
here is getting thicker so i can lift it slightly lifted and again my touching point is very little
so see that it's not creating a lot of friction so i don't add water right it's just the tip tip
to tip so it's very very little friction so i don't add a whole lot of water unless i want to use
the whole center of my palm to do the lifting right if i do that then there's a lot of surface
touching you have to add water to it but now my touching point is very little so
not a whole lot of friction okay and then use the rip to clean up you see that when i'm using
the rib i'm bending it so the bottom portion is not touching okay that's good and then just
finish it up just chop the uh excess clay off the corner so the base motor the whole beast looks
lifting lighter roller texture uh sometimes i do a little bit of alteration like
pinching a little ear on both sides of it push it out and pinch it right here push it out and
pinch it right so you can reshape it before the clay dries and a little bit of alteration so
a little surprise
