Sabotage operations in Russia don't resemble scenes from an action movie and require operatives to remain calm under stress, according to the deputy commander of the "Freedom of Russia" legion, call sign Caesar, in a comment to Business Insider .
It is noted that an operation was carried out in Russia this winter, during which six Gazprom gas distribution stations near Moscow were destroyed. This caused damage to the Russian Federation amounting to over $6 million.
Caesar shared that this operation required several months of planning. He emphasized that such operations are built not on heroism or improvisation, but on discipline, patience, and meticulous preparation. He added that planning is the most important part, as Russian intelligence services are constantly monitoring the situation. "People often imagine covert sabotage operations as adrenaline-fueled action movies. However, the reality is almost the opposite," Caesar said.
The deputy commander of the Freedom of Russia Legion told reporters that the most valuable quality for such work is the ability to remain calm and follow the plan. He also emphasized the importance of understanding when to postpone or abort an operation.
Caesar shared that the details of some operations are kept confidential for months. He explained that operatives often have to be secretly escorted across the border into Ukraine, and if they remained and were caught, they would face lengthy prison sentences or worse.
Caesar explained that the winter sabotage mission is called "Torch." He added that much of the mission is still classified. Planning began a year ago and required several months of preparation, Caesar noted. He stated that the first step was gathering intelligence about the target, and then the legion conducted a risk assessment to determine whether it could effectively carry out the attacks.
The deputy commander of the Freedom of Russia Legion noted that the operation involved an extensive network of agents across Russia who had undergone remote training.
"This is our resistance—the most powerful resistance in Russia. It works daily to destroy the Kremlin's systems," Caesar emphasized.
He assured that the legion plans to conduct more such operations in the future. Caesar told reporters that small covert operations occur daily. He added that larger operations are carried out less frequently. "Every day, every week, every month, our legion grows. Many people clearly understand that Putin has truly destroyed Russia. He hasn't just destroyed Ukraine—he has truly destroyed Russia," Caesar said. Politico previously reported that Russians are actively recruiting Europeans to carry out sabotage in their countries, promising to pay them between $300 and $500.
Potential saboteurs are often offered an all-expenses-paid two-week trip with "active outdoor recreation." Subsequently, the volunteers end up in training camps in Bosnia and Serbia.
