Fondée en 1533 elle fut pendant près de trois siècles un bastion du royaume d'Espagne en Amérique du Sud et eut un rôle clé dans l'administration et l'expansion de l'Empire espagnol. Carthagène fut aussi un important centre de traite des esclaves et de transit vers l'Espagne de l'or issu des pillages des empires aztèque et inca. Le port de Carthagène tient une place primordiale dans l'histoire de l'exploration du monde ainsi que parmi les grands itinéraires maritimes commerciaux.
En plus d’explorer les rues colorées de cette ville fortifiée, nous visiterons avec vous la forteresse San Felipe de Barajas construit en 1536, le jardin botanique, qui dans les fait est une véritable petite jungle remplie de surprises. Nous nous prélasserons à la Playa Blanca, sur la plage la plus populaire de la région, nous visiterons deux charmants villages typiquement colombiens et nous plongerons dans le plancton bioluminescent sous les étoiles.
