We Couldn’t Believe What Cut Her So Deep

This rescue took much longer than expected.
The culprit? A thin, barely visible piece of string. Flimsy and light, something that should have broken with the flick of a flipper. But it didn’t. Instead, it cut deep into this young female seal’s neck, slicing into her flesh with every move she made. It looked like nothing. But it was enough to end her life.
She resisted the rescuers, scared and in pain. The wound was severe, and the string was so embedded in the tissue that it was nearly impossible to remove. The OCN team had to work carefully, slowly, painfully, and use tools usually reserved for the most delicate rescues. What should have been a quick cut-and-release turned into a long, tense operation.
But in the end, she was freed. She took a moment, then bolted back toward the sea. The relief in that moment - for her and for us - is hard to describe.
Seals can’t fight back, especially not against something they can’t even see.
