Russia has begun using civilian airports in the Central Military District, which includes the Urals and Siberia, to base A-50U airborne early warning aircraft . According to analysts from the AviVector group , who analyzed satellite imagery, the aircraft frequently change locations to avoid being targeted.

As of June 4, a concentration of A-50U airborne rapid-response aircraft was detected at the Ivanovo-Severny Air Base in the Ivanovo Region, approximately 700 km from the Ukrainian border. Analysts claim there were eight A-50 aircraft there. One aircraft was discovered at the Vorkuta-Sovetsky Air Base in the Komi Republic, approximately 2,300–2,400 km from Ukraine.

Three more aircraft were spotted at civilian airports: Begishevo Airport in the Republic of Tatarstan, Chelyabinsk Airport, and Nizhnevartovsk Airport in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The DRLV arrived at Chelyabinsk Airport between June 1 and 2, 2026. Previously, two A-50Us were stationed there. The military portal "Military" added that in May 2026, a letter from the company's CEO, Yevgeny Chudnovsky, to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was published on the website of Russia's largest airport holding company, Airports of the Regions, complaining about the deployment of military equipment at civilian airports. Chudnovsky claimed that Russian security forces were illegally seizing civilian infrastructure and deploying military equipment, combat aircraft, and ammunition on civilian airport grounds. He also reported a "heavy atmosphere of fear" and systematic pressure on employees. As a reminder, on June 1st of last year, the SBU conducted a large-scale special operation to destroy bomber aircraft behind Russian lines. This unique operation was dubbed "Spider Web." During the operation, rented trucks delivered drones to Russian strategic aviation bases. During the operation, Ukraine destroyed 41 Russian strategic aircraft, including Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3, and airborne early warning aircraft. Overall, the aggressor country could have lost up to a third of its combat-ready strategic bomber fleet. Russia estimated losses at approximately $26.7 million.

After this, the Russians began looking for ways to hide aircraft , as well as building shelters for tactical aircraft – fighters and bombers. This also forced the Russians to move their aircraft hundreds of kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. Russian officials and military bloggers have repeatedly criticized the country’s leadership for its failure to protect military infrastructure from Ukrainian drone strikes throughout the full-scale invasion. "Russia may be starting to construct protective structures at its air bases after three years of war in response to Spiderweb," ISW analysts stated.
