Ukraine has allocated €2.5 billion from the EU's overall loan package for the purchase of 20 new Gripen E fighter jets. Sweden will also donate 16 more aircraft of previous models to Kyiv. The total deal could eventually grow to 150 aircraft, Reuters reports .
During the signing of agreements with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the arrival of the Gripen in Ukraine a "new page" for Ukrainian aviation.
The Gripen fighter jet was developed by Sweden during the Cold War, with a potential conflict with Russia in mind. Despite years of service in various countries, the aircraft has never been tested in a full-scale, high-intensity war. According to Johan Huovinen, a lecturer at the Swedish Defence University, the Ukrainian campaign will be a real test for Swedish technology.
"This will be a test of the systems that this aircraft is actually designed to combat: Russia," he noted. One of the aircraft's main advantages is its ability to operate away from traditional air bases.
The Gripen can take off and land on regular roads or temporary airstrips. This is especially important for Ukraine, which is constantly facing Russian missile strikes on its airfields. Oleksiy Antonyuk, head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense's defense cooperation department, emphasized that the Gripen's operational concept is almost perfectly suited to Ukrainian conditions.
According to him, the aircraft can be quickly refueled, rearmed, and prepared for another flight in less than ten minutes by a small team of technicians.
Another advantage is the operating cost. According to Ukrainian estimates, an hour of Gripen flight costs approximately $8,000, making it significantly cheaper than flying fifth-generation fighters. The military is paying particular attention to the possibility of using long-range Meteor air-to-air missiles.
Ukrainian experts believe they can force Russian aircraft to operate at a greater distance from the front line and make it more difficult to use guided bombs, which have recently become one of Russia's main strike tools. However, experts urge not to overestimate the potential of the new aircraft. Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, believes the Gripen is the right choice for Ukraine, but emphasizes that even these fighters will not be able to ensure complete air superiority.
The reason remains the powerful Russian air defense system, as well as the Gripen's lack of stealth technology, characteristic of the American F-35. Another challenge remains the pace of production.
The Swedish company Saab currently produces approximately 15 Gripen E aircraft per year and plans to increase this figure to 20–30. Meanwhile, the order backlog already exceeds 100 aircraft.
Saab CEO Mikael Johansson stated that the company is considering cooperation with Ukraine in the areas of repair, maintenance, and spare parts supply, and is not ruling out the localization of certain production processes in the future.
According to Swedish officials, the Gripen's participation in the war could significantly enhance its export prospects. Swedish Defense Minister Poul Johnson believes the Ukrainian contract will demonstrate the aircraft's capabilities to potential buyers worldwide.
