Breaststroke Technique Guide. Part 2. Legs
We've gone through the first phase, which is the arm movement. In this video, we'll go through the second phase, the legs. The legs in breaststroke are crucial because they generate a significant amount of propulsion for the stroke.
Recovery
Many beginners in breaststroke tend to kick at the wrong time. The real kick should begin as soon as the arms are in the recovery phase to shoot forward. You should bend your knees while keeping your ankles in a plantar bend. Before the knees are fully bent, shift your ankles to a dorsiflexion.
Kick Out
You are now setting up in a very powerful position to kick. Your hands are now extended forward and are acting as the point of an arrow, cutting through the water ahead for the rest of your body. Now extend your knees as quickly as you can. Remember to keep your ankles on dorsiflexion to get as much water as possible.
Side Kick
Now that your knees are extended, you need to do two things. Bring your legs together and bring your ankles on a plantar curve. Hold your ankles like that until the recovery of your feet begins again.
As you can see, the frog kick involves all the muscles in the legs. So, to achieve coordination and activate all your muscles, you can practice this exercise.
