During the Song Dynasty, at the crossroads leading out of Lin'an City Hall, a man named Ma Liu operated a restaurant. Though business wasn't thriving, it was sufficient. Ma Liu was obsessed with getting rich quickly, frequently cutting corners on the ingredients used in his guests' meals to make an unethical profit. Since his restaurant was on a major route, customers kept coming despite the shady practices. Over time, patrons who dined there began calling him Black-Hearted Ma Liu.
